That's good news. Unfortunately that document has been with QT for more than a year and during that time they've indicated that they won't be adopting it.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

      tyres/wheels 120 prado

Hi All, I recently contacted Relavant authority by Email, Re-fitting 265/70r/17 Cooper tyres, the following is the reply i received.

Vehicle standards bulletin (VSB) 14, section LS Tyres, Rims, Suspension and Steering states that the overall diameter of any tyres fitted to an off-road passenger vehicle must not be more than 50mm larger or 26mm smaller than that of any tyre designated by the vehicle manufacturer for that model.
The tyre and Rim Assoc of Aust, Standards Manual lists the diameter of a 265/65r/17 tyres as 776mm and a 265/70r/17 tyre as 804mm, placing it within the allowable 50mm increase. I have included the link below to VSB14 for your Ref.

      hope this helps
      Cheers

        Steve,

What state have you emailed that for the reply. Here in SA I still can't find anything except the old 15mm allowable increase in diameter.

I will email the state authorities this evening and see if I can get a different ruling.

Again I think it varies from state to state. I believe the 50mm larger or 26mm smaller applied to vehicle with rigid axle (non IFS).

Just have to be patient, I'm sure one day all the states will adopt the NCOP standards.

I have just phoned Roads SA vehicle inspections and South Australia are still limited to not exceed 15mm overall diameter increase.

They are currently looking at adopting the national vehicle standards but have no idea if the state will or what time frame that will take.

They did mention that the other way of getting the increase is to take it to a certified engineer and have them assess your size increase and then the vehicle inspections will send out a waiver for the increase wheel diameter. $$$$ cost unknown.

So unfortunately I will have to wait till I move or they change the rules.

              tyres

              Hi Bomber,

It was in Vic, but they refered to the ncop (national code of practice) vehicle standards bulletin. so it must really be across all states & territories..

              Cheers

Unfortunately the national code of practice isn't so national yet. It still has to be accepted by the individual states.

Hopefully it will be all sorted by the time I need tyres. I'm running the standard grandcraps at the moment and with only 5000km on them I figure it will be at least 12 months possibly 2 years before I need new rubber.

I had the older style STT's on my 4runner and got 50,000km out of them before I sold it with still around 30% tread left. Since then I have been a bit of a fan of the Cooper's tyres, but I might be looking at the Mickey Thompson's all terrains when the time comes.

Anyway hope you have some fun with your new toy when it arrives.

                      tyres

Im a bit of a fan of Cooper tyres too, had them on my Disco (Trading in against Prado) for over 5 years, have been great on & off road, 1st set got 65,000 with tread to spare, so i thought gotta have em on the Prado.

                      Cheers

The 70's are a light truck construction in the main and so have a lot stronger construction in the sidewall which is a lot better out in the middle of australia (or pretty much anywhere where there could be sharp things to stick through the tyres)) as you will get less punctures.
Also you get more ground clearance which is a big factor in 4wding
Also when you air down the stronger sidewall will mean that the tyre will tend to elongate rather than bag sideways, whiah is better in almost any instance in 4wding

If you arn't going to go 4wding, then stick with the standard

                              Cheers Bitdist,

I've never considered sidewalls before as all my 4wding is on the sand! All I've ever worried about is floatation and momentum.

                                Cooper ATR's in 70 profile

                                Best day of my life......

Finally got rid of the Dunlop Grandtreks today and have replaced them with Cooper ATR's in a taller 70 profile. This should give me 1/2 inch or so more clearance and bit more grip off road.

I thought about Cooper ST's but like most of us the Prado still spends most of its life on the bitumen and I really don't think I will be doing too much rock crawling/mud work in my $50,000 baby....

I also decided against Light Truck L/T construction - I hope I don't regret it. The tyre salesman told me the L/T gives a firmer/hard ride and reckons the 7 ply ATR's would be most adequate....I've bottomed out a bit on a few recent trips so I am hoping the 70 profile may help...

Anyway guys, just had to tell someone about my brand new Cooper's in the driveway :P :P
