  • Spare wheel cover wont stay firm on new tyre?

    Hi all,
I had a new dunlop grandtrek tyre under the spare wheel cover (hard one genuine) never had any problems. Now i sold that tyre and replaced it with a worn grandtrek (around 40-50% same size 265 65 17) now for some reason the cover won't grip the tyre at the bottom eg when the cover's done up even as tight as i can get it you can still pull it off from the bottom without much effort. i've tried cleaning the tyre etc any ideas?. Hoping someone else has had the same problem.
    Cheers.

    Hi azzss
Just have to check out most Prado's with a spare wheel cover to notice that they are on crooked, eg Prado letters on the angle.
We bought our cover new from Dealer spare parts, in the kit come a few pieces of foam rubber with self adhesive backing.
The instructions mentioned adding these packers to the inside of the cover until a firm fit was achieved.
The reverse of this accured when we fitted new Bridgestones in 265/65r/17 and some of the packers where removed.
You could substitute some thing to act as a packer 75 mm squares at about ten o'clock and two o'clock and even a strip on the locking strap.
    Cheers Troy

Maybe try an over-inflate your tyre or place a rag on the top of the tyre before putting the cover back onto bulk it out a bit. A bit of trial and error.

Thanks for the replies. Foxclan, i have noticed the wheel covers on some prado's crooked didn't know why. I might try packing it out some more or a rag even as MDS69 said.
        Cheers

By the way, the strap on the cover what the lock hooks onto, is it supposed to go on the tyre or on the plastic surround below the tyre (between the tyre and the tailgate)
          Cheers.

I can not help with that one our Prado didn't have this fitted, so is only on the tyre.
            Cheers Troy
