  • Spare Tube?

I'm looking at doing a one week charity run next year and on the list of mandatory items besides two complete spare wheels (not a problem for me now) is a new spare tube.

I was in a well known tyre place the other day and asked about this and they said that with the 17" factory alloys I have fitted I can't fit a tube. They offered to give me a spare tube to carry so that I was compliant but said it would be totally useless to me.

Anyone know if this is a true statement?

    Thanks

Won't they accept a tableless repair kit instead of a tube ?

No mate, you have to have a repair kit as well. I think they are going to extremes that are probably not needed.

When you have two full spares... who the hell wants to carry a tube around ???
Surely they are again referring to those old 2wd/AWD cars they mentioned.

Ohh wait!! may be to throw into the campfire at the end to get rid of the mossies

They are exactly right,i have 18 years in the tyre industry and fitting tubes to tyres in an effort to fix a problem was one of my biggest sellers of a new tyre,if a tubeless tyre can't be fixed by a tubeless repair the tyre is usually unfixable ,a tube just a stop gap repair as a lot of modern tyres arn't designed to have tubes fitted

Strange as I would have thought the bead sealing properties in today's tubeless tyres was the main reason for inner tubes being redundant. The inner surface of a tubeless tyre looks rough as guts, at least my spare Cooper ST is so don't imagine a rubber inner lasting too long against something akin to a woodworkers rasp!

Thanks for confirming guys, I guess I will take them up on the offer of a tube so that I'm compliant and forget about it.

You have done well to be offered a tube. When I tried a few years ago, 17" tubes were not being manufactured. Wouldn't be surprised if you will be getting a 16" tube and if you have to fit it, you will have to give it a big stretch. Anything to make the rule makers happy I guess.Heaps of fun for floating down a river though

Guess that tube I got for my madigans trip was a waste of money then! I suppose they won't fit the speedy alloys either then.

We put a tube in a badly torn tyre on a Pajero on the Madigans trip, not safe for highway driving but got him across the desert.

                    Cheers Andrew
