  • Tyre iron too big for wheel nuts??!!!

Hi all, just thought I'd find if anyone has had the same problem. I had my first flat tyre on the Prado yesterday which was a pain as I'd just finished a 12 hour day at work and was 1km away from my home and beer fridge when I got the puncture, but anyway I jacked her up, got the iron out, got the spare off no problems but when I went to take the flat off I soon found out that my Prado tyre iron was a millimetre or 2 too big so it kept slipping and wearing the nuts! Luckily a polite bloke pulled over and had a 19mm deep socket which did the trick. But what gets me is I was able to get the spare off and the nuts on the spare look exactly the same as the ones on the flat???? Anyone care to shed some light on this one?

One or the other (tyre lever or nuts) are not standard. Guessing it is nuts. Aftermarket wheels?

No actually they are the standard Prado rims from what Ive seen on similar makes of my Prado. New tyres of course. Has puzzled me though!

The standard Prado nuts are 21mm, I have some aftermarket speedy wheels and they have 19mm nuts. Sounds like standard nuts on the spare and aftermarket on the vehicle.

        Cheers Andrew

I've just switched to aftermarket rims and have smaller nuts as a result. Its ok though as it was my choice

I reckon AJ is on the money and that you have Speedy Grande rims, which are the genuine look-a-likes. If you have the Speedy Grandes, be aware that not only are the nut sizes different between the Speedy Grande rims vs. genuine, but one set also have a taper on them and I have read elsewhere that they are NOT interchangeable.

You can get either an socket adaptor to fit into your tyre lever, or get a tyre lever crossbrace which has a 19mm socket end, which is fairly common.

Correct. But its ok as it makes my 'tyres' look bigger.

Yep that's why I always buy OEM, I cannot afford any shrinkage!

I just measured the size of my NUTS. I have 4 speedy grande wheels and a steel spare and all the nuts are the same size 21mm and the factory brace fits ok. Not sure about if they have a taper on the alloy wheel nuts ,they appear parralel and also fit the additional spare wheel which is a Toyota Phoenixs wheel . I know on my old 90s i had the Toyota kimberly wheels [speedy manufactured] and those had a different size nuts to the steel wheels. You may be able to upsize the wheel nuts to suit the brace and then won't need to find a home for a 2nd wheel brace.

There were 2 types of Speedy Grande wheels. One that took the tapered nuts and the other that took the flanged nut. The flanged nut is the same as the factory nut which needs a 21mm socket.
