  • Coopers ST Maxx 265/70/R17's rubbing

    Hi All

I recently replaced my old Coopers ST 265/70/R17's with new ST Maxx in the same size but nourning one w they appear to rub when turning (more one way) but didn't really have this issue before. I just had it serviced & dealer said it is because I should have had 265/65/R17's fitted.

Does anyone else have this problem with the same tyres/size, and is this dangerous? I mainly hear/fell the rubbing over100km/h.

Where is it rubbing? Mine is pretty close to the upper control arm linkage but it doesn't touch anywhere else on my 120. I run Goodyear MT/Rs though.

It be surpirsed if its making contact at 100km/h - how much lock can you possibly put on at that speed and still keep the shiny side up?

Usually rubbing is noticable at low speeds where you are able to reach full-lock - or articulation but neither should be coming up at that speed?

Are you sure there is not something else going on?

With 70 series tyrea and standard rims you can get slight rubbing on the sway bar and the chassis to the rear of the wheel at full lock and under compression. I have never "felt" it but have some marks to show the light rubbing. Can't imagine what is rubbing at 100km/hr though, unless your tyres are really under inflated adn bulging a bit and rubbing the UCA, but even this seems highly unlikely.

Ond day I will find a set of rims with a better offset that I like and that will stop any rubbing.

        Cheers Andrew

On the 150 I have a similar problem to AJ120, full lock and full compression on suspension the tyre rubs on the chassis rail at the back . The extra tyre wall lugs on the S/T Maxx's just enough width to touch. Only other rub mark was on a bad bottom out at about 90kph on gravel. Tyre grazed top of inner guard when I hit the bump stop

Do you have a lift and would that make any difference?

I was set on ST Maxx's until I read your post. This is the first one I have found that said a 265/70/17 rubs on a 150

Mate I don't mean to put you off, it barely touches and only when at full lock and maximum flex (i.e. serious off road). The other time was too fast through a washout so I don't think I'd ever have that happen again. I do have 2" Old Man Emu though to answer your question. I wouldn't ever hesitate replacing them with other 265/70 17's no matter what brand.

              Cheers,
              Dusty

Hi All, I too have rub marks on chassis rail, used to run the previous Cooper ST's & had no probs, now on ST Maxx
& have run marks, don't feel any probs thru steering etc, tyre are noisier than previous ST's
Recently did Robe Trip, deflated tyres down to 15psi but they still looked like they were on a higher psi, unlike the ST's
Which balloon out well for sand. Do STT's rub??
                Cheers,
