Corine,
Black on silver is mad! Silver is a bit soft. I just powdercoated my second set.

Yep fresh rubber too.
$110 per wheel if anyone is interested.
It's tuff that's how the do lawn mowers etc.
If you want cheap & reversible, yes plastidip, but it can be hard to get off.
Steves paint is really good, can't go past it or value!

Well you know I like the black on silver, it's what I've always had on the Kaka. Any reason you chose powder over paint? Did you get a nice smooth finish? Place I got my spare painted at last time said they won't do powdercoat as they can't get the same finish, only reason I ask.Originally posted by Anth120playdo View PostBlack on silver is mad! That's what I'm planning on putting on as well. They look good ####!Yep fresh rubber too.
A bit over half what I've been quoted for painting but the paint is a 2-pack job with satin clear coat.$110 per wheel if anyone is interested.
How does it hold up out on the tracks? Paint does get scuffed but would be easier to touch-up I imagine, not sure how easy it is with powder. It's tuff that's how the do lawn mowers etc.
Looks good for a DIY job, not sure I have the steady hands required.Steves paint is really good, can't go past it or value!

I chose powdercoat becsuse the wheels i used were stuffed! corroded badly.
The job includes sandblasting to bare metal, hand rub back, as well as the oven & costing so its great value to bring back a bad set of wheels.
Becase I have a contact it's supercheap for me
That's why they do lawn mower bases with powdercoat. Tuff. So it holds up the best.
Mine have copped some rock dancing damage, bit like my sliders & other stuff, so damaged but anything would be,
that's ok, looks used lol.....
But steves paint is easy to touch up & half price again.
Pressure pack painting is easy.
Put a cheap set of cards between wheels & tyre for cutting in.
Mave left to right smooth & swift & don't stop on the job.

Ah OK, fair enough then. The rims I'm getting should be "as new" so I shouldn't have that issue.Originally posted by Anth120playdo View PostI chose powdercoat becsuse the wheels i used were stuffed! corroded badly.
It's tempting. But steves paint is easy to touch up & half price again.
My rims are arriving sans tyres so it will be even easier.Put a cheap set of cards between wheels & tyre for cutting in.
Thanks for the tip, there's also a few vids on YouTube that give some good pointers.Mave left to right smooth & swift & don't stop on the job.

For what it is worth #2 and his mate have used the venerable spray can on the steelies on their Colorado/Rodeo. One used the 52 card trick and the other masking tape and newspaper. Both worked fine. The steelies have muddies on so they get a workout and so far no problems. But they scuffed the wheels first. Not sure I would like to do that with some nice alloys, you would need to etch prime too to ensure bonding. Powder coat is a better finish and I would think more durable on alloy. My 150 build - http://www.pradopoint.com/showthread.php?27423-A-Random-approach-to-a-Bluestorm-150-GXL-D4D-automatic

Hi Fido,Originally posted by fido666 View Post..
FJ Cruiser rims, new style. Might leave them silver but will decide when they get here, they look good black too.
..
How much are FJC rims going for - if you don't mind asking.
I was looking at 17" before - but new 17" + rubber isn't much different from 18" rubber by themselves with less hassle.
Also, saw this guy did plastidip on his rim - looks easy and cheaper I reckon.

please don't aerosol can or plasti dip your wheels!
its only around $80 A wheel to be sprayed or Powdercoated with my preference on the later.
im a spraypainter ive done literally hundreds of reworks from guys not quite getting it right with the rattle can.
cheers

There's a few sets around on eBay & Gumtree, I got a full set of 5 for a decent price. I looked around at after-market rims that were already black but didn't find anything I liked that were suitable for fitment to a Kakadu.Originally posted by fatty boy View PostHow much are FJC rims going for - if you don't mind asking.
Yes but I'm changing to 17s for a better range of tyres and taller sidewall. I only have to buy the rims once and the rubber will be cheaper from now on.I was looking at 17" before - but new 17" + rubber isn't much different from 18" rubber by themselves with less hassle.
Interesting coming from a spraypainter. Do you prefer powdercoat for looks or durability?Originally posted by lippa View Postits only around $80 A wheel to be sprayed or Powdercoated with my preference on the later.Last edited by fido666; 03-12-2015, 05:48 PM.

OK, sounds reasonable. Can you get a nice smooth finish with the powdercoat or does it generally have a texture? Can you get a gloss finish with it or just matte? The powdercoat on my bull bar seems smooth but it's a bit of a flat colour and starting to look a bit dull, that's why I'm asking.Originally posted by lippa View PostChip resistance

Plasti-dip holds the brake dust so your wheels will look dull and dirty faster. I'm getting my alloys powder coated as they look terrible with over 6 years of stone chips from the dirt roads. Bull bar gets powder coated after chrissy as the paint is completely dull and cracked.Dave
