  • Tyre size options

I am about to fit a new set of tyres, and was wondering if there are any reasons I wouldn't go for 265 70 R17's? I like the idea of the additional bit of clearance, but as it spends by far the most time as a daily ride in town, I don't want to sacrifice handling or safety.

I'd also be interested in options of going to a 270 width rather than the 265.

For what it's worth I'm fitting BFG AT's.

I have 265/70/17 BFG AT on a daily driver and no problems. As I have a later model, my speedo reads accurate. Personally anything wider than 265 with standard offset rims will scrub on the control arms.

You will notice it in the economy a tad as your pushing bigger rubber, also if you decide to do any steep off roading it will be noticeable, and I've mentioned before here in NSW a 70 profile would make you illegal as its more then the 15mm diameter increase allowed, may not be an issue in Tasi ?? In saying that I would say 99% of prados running bigger size tyres have had no issues or claims refused. I just worry if I hit some one and killed them then it may be a totally different ball game, as it also wipes out my insurance because I'm illegal. ""Bigger tyres, more stopping distance needed maybe I wouldn't have hit the person if I had the right size legal tyres on"" just hypothetical if some one want to sue my arse ???....Cheers Steve

Maybe the ATZ"s are a tad smaller even thou same profile, eg tread depth not as deep ?? Bob Jane told me everyone fits them (BF's) no issues if I did. I asked him was he willing to sign on the receipt to say all was ok, no chance......Cheers Steve

I tossed this same thing up. Now the Prado is at the tyre place as we speak having 275/65/17 BFG ATs fitted.

I went with the 65 series rather than the 70 for a few reasons, one is which is that we couldn't get the rear wheel carrier to fit over the BFG, apparently the MT ATZ 4 rib in this size fits (150 not sure about the 120), but I could not get the BFG to fit (Yes I know everyone thinks they look better without the cover, but my wife likes it therefore in order to get the mods approved, so do I).

I went from a 65 to a 70 series tyre on my old car and it really affected the fuel economy, by way of around 2-3L per 100k. The 70 series seemed to provide a slightly more comfortable ride than the 65 series, however the 65s did handle a bit better. I am not talking huge really noticeable differences here; my wife did not notice any difference.

I also do as much towing and touring as 4x4ing, so I think that the 275s are a good compromise for me. If you go and have a look at the 3 BFG AT tyres (265/65, 265/70 and 275/65) in the real (line them up side by side), there is only a very slight difference 265/65 to the 275/65, however the 265/70 is quite noticeably larger and heavier.

Time will tell if I have made the correct decision I suppose and really, it all depends what you are wanting to do the most of. If you are mainly 4x4 or off-road the 70 series might be a better option.

From what I have seen and read, the 275s should not rub on the upper control arms - having said that I do have a 150 and a 2" Lift, but again I am not sure about the 120.

            Cheers!

As with The Alberto above, I have 275/65R17s fitted (Yoko ATs), and have never had a problem with any scrubbing on the control arms.

I have kept the same width, of 265, but moved up from 65 section, to 70 section.

I find the BFG All Terrains, very well suited.

I went the 265 70 R17's in BFG ATs. You won't be sacrificing anything except maybe a bit of fuel economy. Handling, braking etc is superior to the Grandcraps. What are you running now?

                  Cheers, Jim.
