  • Tyres for 06 Prado (From New) ??

Pick up the new Prado shortly, and decided I better have a think about tyres!

I gather it will come with some variant of the Grandtreks on it?

What are people running that are giving reasonable mileage, low noise and are somewhat better than the grandtreks?

I notice Coopers seem to be popular? Anything else? Simex, bridgestone etc?

I will probably swap them from new to see If I can get a trade in on them thats worth anything, I read somewhere that someone scored $1000! for them!

I guess the Wife will steal it from day one, so it will mainly get city driving with a few trips Highway and some dirt monthly.
Sand may also get a look in but not more than maybe 4 times a year at this point.
I would prefer to keep the tread noise down if possible.

I run a 4wd Work vehicle and we have been using AWR safari's on those, they last forever, and havent let us down yet! We are getting average 85000 to 100000 kms before needing replacement ! Vehicle weighs in at 2.4 tonne. They are somewhat noisy after about 40000 kms though

    Thoughts anyone? Experiences?

    Hi Piggy (kermit voice!),

Here's what I posted to the lcool list:

I traded in my Gradtreks for $1,000 ($200 each) when my vehicle was brand new, and fitted a set of 5 Cooper ATR 265/65R17s.

I'm very happy with the Coopers so far, although I've only done about 2,000km in them, about 800km off road.

They are not noticably noiser than the Dunlops, the excellent sound deadening in the Prado certainly helps this. They stick to the road very well, I live in the Blue Mountains and travel up and down Bellbird Hill every day/night - so good on-road performance is vital to me.

Why did I choose the Coopers? Reputation, I've owned their tyres before. They seem to be made to a very high standard, unlike mass produced tyres that are fitted when new. The price was reasonable at
$279 each (still an appreciable amount of fun-tickets though!)

I wanted resonable off road performance, but I didn't want to hamper my on-road performance or make the vehicle handle like a tractor. (I know it's a perfect combination that can't always be achieved!)

FWIW, I had a set of Dunlop AT2 All Terrains on my old Subaru, they were very very noisey. Annoying noisy. And they chipped and wore fast.

Everyone has a different opinion on tyres, that is plain to see, this is just what works for me and what decision process I went throguh.

    Hope it helps,

    Drew.

Piggy we put Bridgestone Duelers AT's on ours from day 1.

They are apparently quieter than coopers.

I never hear any road noise and its certainly less than the xtrail. We had Yokohamas AT's on that.

I saw a new one this morning with Duellers on it.
Are the new duellers any better than the ones from years ago?
I remember running them once and they fell to bits after 500 kms of gibbers when working up around woomera. Literally peeled the treads off them!

        They were shockingly noisy too

I have been happy with the Safari's but they are not as good as Coopers etc I hear.

What kind of mileage can be expected from the Coopers/ Duellers? etc?

Cooper ATR vs Cooper STT that everyone raves about? Thoughts? Experiences?

Did you buy yours new embi? If so, how did you get rid of the old tyres? trade in?

Another stupid question, do most of these tyres we are discussing fit the door carrier, and guards etc, speedo differences ? or same size?

So many questions and so few answers

I've never used duellers before but a mate* of the wife's recommended them. I have no idea of thier past or current performance but he knows his stuff. He said coopers would be the first choice but for our needs, less offroad unfortunately, he said the duellers were the ticket.

I can say I hear no road noise. Not like the AT's we put on the X-trail.

Our Prado is a salary sacrifice thing the wife does with her work...Lease agreement...We just arranged to have them on when we picked it up.

We did however ring around for the xtrail. We drove it straight from the dealer and to the tyre place....the traded them in. I cant remember the price at the time but it was a good deal. Some places do it some dont.

          * My wife works with this guy who is heavily into 4WD'ing. I say to her we need something for the car, she rings him and makes sure about it. Sometimes I gt it other times I dont. We are getting Blackwidow drawers put into the car and were always quoted above $2000. He gave us a number and said say I sent you and we have got a price of $1600 and that includes extras the others werent going to add in. He has done many Central AU trips and knows what he is talking about. We got the Duellers on his recommendation.

Bridgestone Dueller D694 is sold in USA as Dueller AT Revo

This is probably going to be a tyre to replace my Grandtreks... or maybe Cooper ATR (depends what I can get cheaper)...

I guess, (No I know) even though it is "meant" to be another work car for me, that the Wife will lay claim to it within say: 20 minutes of picking it up?

So it will in reality get about 90% at least on bitumen, with forays onto good to reasonable dirt roads for family outings on weekends here n there.
Add some more fun stuff like beach runs, (Sand) and the occasional puddle of mud , and some slighly rougher dirt you have the overall terrian tackling.

I run the Kelly safaris and have been very happy with them, have heard Duellers arent crash hot in the wet when slightly worn, and BFG are noisy as. Mickey thompson came up good as did Coopers.

              Oh so hard :-P

Need to have a chat to the dealer and see if I can wangle them into putting something else on it. I dont think getting rid of the grandtreks will hurt
