  • What Brand besides BFG

    Hi All,

I'm looking at replacing my BFG AT with some thing else. New rims in the shed waiting for boots so the STD Alloys may go with tyres if any 1 is interested. I have been looking at Kumho and Federals, and other brands trying to see what else is out there.

I've had Muddies before and now all terrains but im looking for the ALTERNATIVE. Hit me up with your trial and errors as I don't see the value in the BFGs for what you get. (unless you can tell me why they are more$$$$)

    Cheers

    Lindsay
    Regards

Well u want an alternative to a/t & mud?
    So you want a hybrid.
Mickey Thompson atz 4 rib or cooper stmax.
But you will pay a lot for those like bfg, in fact more than bfg.
So keep looking at kumho & federal they are a bit cheaper. But I'd pay the extra, don't like those 2 much.
Bridgestone make good value tyres, d694/697 a/t.

You can't go wrong with the Bridgestone D697 265/70/17LT for daily driver and touring duties.

Just put two 697 s on the front for my simpson trip. One came back in marked, with some very harsh roads, the other got a sidewall cut, and was a write off. In all fairness i think the sidewall cut was just bad luck, the sidewall on the 697 is meant to be very tough.

Given the lack of wear on the good one, I'm impressed.
The slightly worn Yoko geolanders on the back came back pretty nicked and cut.

I've had atleast 4 set's of BFG A/T's.......they are good tyre no doubt about it........but there are other good tyres out there nowadays aswell.

I tried the Dick Cepek FCII's on my 100 series and found them marginally better off road than the BFG's but LOT's noisier,
This time around I went some Goodyear Wrangler Dura Tracs and have done about 10k on them so far.......so far so good I must say....really quiet for an aggressive tread pattern and work well as an intermediate all terrain tyre in L/T construction.

I know of a few others that have them now and they are all pretty impressed with them also, don't get them mixed up with the MTR Wrangler cos I've seen them first hand fall to bit's.

They have to be regarded as a genuine contender for sure,

I have the Mickey STZ which I can't fault but you pay for the privilege and its way more than the BFG's.

Previously the Pirelli Scorpions wouldn't recommend these though and they are probably more expensive than the BFG's anyway

Interesting reply, I'm in the same position as the OP - looking for new tyres in 265/70R17 and the BFGs have to be high on the list. Micky T's are another but more expensive as others have said. I currently have D694s in 265/65R17LT and asked about the newer D697s and have been told by the tyre shops that you can't get these in 265/70R17, only in 265/65R17.

These certainly are a fair amount cheaper than the BFGs and look pretty good - I want something a bit more aggressive than the usual A/Ts. They seem to have quite a good reputation but could be a bit of a problem if touring as you can only get them from Bob Jane's.

I've just checked the Bridgestone website and they don't list this size which stacks up with what the tyre shops told me.

Yes my error Trekrider, I run BFG AT 265/70/17 because I can't get D697 in that size as they only make 265/65/17

275/65/17 is a good compromise not that much smaller in the 697, good price as well usually around 300.

For reference, the best prices I've been quoted so far for 265/70R17 are:

                        BFG A/T $395
                        MT STZ $397
                        MT ATZ (4 Rib) $406
                        Dick Cepek $369
                        Telstar Wild Trac $340

Interesting outside diameter on the 697
                          265/65/17 776mm
                          275/65/17 790mm
                          285/65/17 802mm

BFG 265/70/17 801mm also has a higher load rating than the D697

I assume the 285 will be too wide though...

                            Hey Dan,

I'm interested in hearing more - Are you talking Goodyear MTR Kevlars?
Ok, I now drive an FJ Cruiser but did have an 90 series Prado for 11 years and before that, 4Runners from 1985.

A mate had them on his 70 series RV turbo Cruiser ute and they literally fell apart within 18mths.......it was like the tread itself was made of a very hard compound.

Never had a blowout but the tread lugs came off......with moderate 4wding aswell.......certainly nothing more than they were designed to do.The Good Year dealer came to the party suppling 2 new tyres which he swapped over to Dura Tracs and ended up buying 2 to make a full set.
