  • Noisy MAXXIS

Hi, our recently acquired Prado came with a fresh set of MAXXIS 265/65/17s. They seem to be a good off-road tyre but rather noisy on the bitumen.

Specifically, they set up a high pitch hum at any cruising speed on a smooth surface. Good on rough bitumen but noisy on smooth.

Before I take the drastic step of replacing them, just wondering if anyone else has experience with the maxxis and/or ideas as to the cause and/or solution to the noise. A wheel alignment was done at the time of fitting the tyres ... i just wondered?

Of course, if it is just the tyre, then I will drive it a bit longer and then consider options. Might even grow accustomed to it. Turn off the cd and enjoy

I'm rather computer illiterate, but will see if the daughter can help with a photo. I did manage to locate a photo on maxxis.com but too dull to work out how to import it. :?

But yes, they are MAXXIS p265/65R/17 112S MA 761

Didn't know that Maxxis made a tyre in that size...

I could forgive it being noisy if it was a muddy, but noise HT is not a great thing - having said that though, the D694 is also quite a maker of noise on the highway...

          761 is an AT Tyre.

It would be noisier than a HT.

The squeal would be directly influenced by the amount of rubber in contact with the bitumen.

Ie: HT - Little to no noise as more rubber in contact with bitumen

AT - A higher pitched noise as there is less rubber than HT but more than MT

MT - A lower pitched noise as there is less rubber in contact with the bitumen, hence the lower pitched noise.

Bear, I have the Maxxis (one size up from yours) but I've been very happy with them. They are cheap & should give plenty of Ks for a very good price.
They certainly weren't any noisier than the previous ones on the car. Suggest before you go to the high expense of replacing them, see if a Pradopointer close to you will either let you take their rig for a drive or loan your their tyres for a quick run. You may find that the tyre aren't as bad as you think.

Bear, that tyre shouldn't be real noisy as it isn't real aggressive, my 694's started to wear a little uneven and began to get a little noisy, my tyre dealer swapped them to diagonal corners to even up the wear and they have quiten a little over the last few thousand clicks. Thats all i can suggest, any all terrain will produce some noise, unless you aren't planning to go off road, don't get HT's.

                  Hi,
thanks to all for the feedback. I will give the maxxis a go for a bit longer, might try swapping diagonally, as that sounds like a worthwhile and easy experiment.

Might try experimenting with tyre pressure a little as well.

And you are correct Damien, it is an AT not an HT ... learning that a bit of noise is an expected trade off makes it a bit easier to Bear.

then, of course, if its still too noisy in a few months, there is always Grandtreks

                    Hi,
I contacted the supplier of the MAXXIS. He immediately invited to me bring the Prado in and leave it with him for an hour and a bit.

Upon my return he had balanced of the front wheels, checked the alignment and reduced the tyre pressure by 2psi all round.

Cost? "All part of the service "

Outcome: Noticeably smoother ride, the noise is still there but much reduced and quite tolerable - especially for an A/T. Only thing, - don't know what helped :?:, but pleased with the outcome.

                    Thanks again for the suggestions.

That's good that it was free..

Yes, and I will be pleased to mention Paul Pearce, Grange Street Toowoomba to friends looking for tyres.

As for a Pradopoint sticker ... will search this site to find how to purchase one. A bit later tho ... got a job that needs attention just now.

Thats good news Bear, secret now is to keep the rotations up every 5-10k, i do mine every five and BJT look after me and only charge me every second time.

Thanks for the advice Hutch. I will definitely go for the diagonal rotation at future balances. And yes, guess i will just have to learn to live with a bit of road noise. Coming from a whisper quiet Magna, together with
the fact that the prado had Grandtreks on it when we took it for a test drive, may have made the noise seem more intolerable.

At the same time, it is now a whole lot better than it was ...

By the way, you guys failed in your duty of care to this simple city codger ... It was a whole lot easier getting mud on the prado than getting getting it back off again
