  • BFGoodrich ‎Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 - 120 Prado

On to a new set of tyres so thought I'd start a write up and review for them as I did with the Kumho KL71's.

I picked up some BFG KM2's in 265/70 R17 from Ozzy Tyres and had them freighted to Darwin and fitted. All up they cost $360 a corner fitted. Initial problems with Ozzy tyres were they sent me four and I paid for five. So at this stage my spare is the still almost new KL71. In short I won't deal with Ozzy again or recommend them. If you want any more info about it send me a PM.

Initial thoughts on the tyres are good, compared with the directional KL71's they are slightly quieter on the road, but overall they are still a mud tyre and still have that drone when driving on certain highway tarmac over 100m's. They seem to have made the steering feel a little lighter compared to the out going tyres as expected, but they also look a little skinnier. I'm going to do a speedo and GPS run with them and see if there is any change as well. I'll post results as when this is done.

Anyway can't have a thread without pictures so here they are..

I sold quite a few of these when i had my tyre store , i found the best results came from cross rotates every 5000 km's , the people who used em loved em tho!

Cross rotate? Do you mean FL to RR, FR to RL, RR to FL, RL to FR?

Probably means different things in different states , rears go forward and steers get crossed to the opposite on the back, the steers are the ones that start to scallop due to the lugs not being able to flex properly when cornering and ripping the rubber off the trailing edge of the tyre , by doing this they get reversed and even out the wear
And NO they do not get a memory in the tyre from the direction they run in , old wives tail

6 tyre rotation solves that. Just need to number them so you know what goes where..

1 of the rears would go to the spare , the spare would go to the front

Or have 6 tyres like wooley said

Why wouldn't you put the FL to the spare as that is usually the tyre that gets the most wear?

You will love them, rotation aside. I have only had mine rotated once (I'm bad, I know). I have just clocked over 40k on mine and still have over 50% tread left. Currently back in WA after leaving Darwin today and will be doing the GRR tomorrow non stop to Derby.
                  Love it

the steers need to be reversed and run on the car for a while to even out the lugs , if you just put it on the spare then stick it on the front next rotate they don't get a chance to even out the wear as much
AS for the left front wearing more , that has more to do with the same path people drive every day , also the wheel alignment needs to be setup for different driving habits

Got it, I am assuming the couple of mm diameter difference between the older tyre and the newer tyre on the front won't have an impact on the diff?

Is there anything wrong with the rotation pattern that Toyota recommend in the (150) manual? ie spare to RL, RL to FR, FR to RR, RR FL, FL to spare.

If rotation was performed at regular intervals (like every 5000), in the same way each time, and driving patters didn't change too much over time, I wouldn't have thought it mattered too much which actual rotation sequence was used... so long as each tyre got equal time at each position over their lives then it should be OK?

Keen to understand if I am doing it wrong and have flawed logic though.

You are pretty well right about them bring a little skinnier.
I have owned both of them in this size.
I can give you a few specs on them if you are interested.

                          Kl71:tread depth is 18.5/32", tread width 9.5", o.d is 31.9".
                          Km2: tread depth 18/32", tread width 8.3", o.d is 31.7".

What many experts don't even know or tell you even if they knew, don't worry too much about the section width (265) as this is no relation to tread width - ( rubber on the ground).
It's very disappointing when you buy a 265mm wide tyre & the tread width is often around 200mm.
This is one thing I liked about the kl71 over an inch more on the road x 4.

Now the o.d 31.7 or 31.9 won't make much difference to the speedo.
All tyres in this size, referred to as 32" are anything around those 2 o.d.
As you would already know it should have your speedo reading accurate + or - 1 k.

I thought the km2 were very good tyre, despite its pissy narrow look.
The kl71, looked the goods, i thought was great in the slop, while moving forward, but otherwise not the best offroad.
I thought they were ok on road for a mud tyre.

I hope some of that info was interesting or at least some help.

No your logic is not flawed , that rotate regime is fine for a highway tyre , the muddies because of the aggressive tread design need to be rotated a little different thats all
From what you have copied from the manual , the front right goes to right rear, with the more aggressive treads the steers need to run in the reverse direction to wear the lugs on the tread better , that's why they get crossed over , highway tread don't have this problem so much because of the finer tread pattern
