  • BF Goodrich All Terrain Tyres

I am (hopefully) getting delivery of my new Grande next week and have looked into swapping the standard Grandtrek tyres to All Terrain tyres. I have been told that they are not available for the Prado rims. Is this right? Can anyone give me advice on this?

I am choosing All Terrains from past good experience from previous land Cruisers.

    Any advice appreciated!!!

Thanks for the quick reply. I spoke to one retailer and he advised there may be an issue with the tyre scrubbing on full lock (reckons he knew someone who had this problem with a Prado) so I'm starting to think I should look at alternative tyres and stay withn the 265/65 x 17 size range. He was pushing the Coopers. I'll have a bit more of a look through the reviews in this section and see what happens.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

I picked up my D4D at the end of October. In talking to the dealer when ordering I specified the BFG A/T tyres to be fitted prior to delivery, which was done, with a trade given for the standard tyres. The dealer simply advised me that my speedo may be a bit out but since I have a GPS I wasn't worried!

It is only lately reading this forum that I find the tyres probably are not quite legal here in NSW - but they certainly look good and I think I would have to be damn unlucky to get picked up for it.

With the new tyres the speedo reads 100% accurate - GPS 100km/h, speedo 100km/h.

The comment re the spare on the back door is correct. The plastic backing frame has to be removed to fit the tyre on the door (not an issue) and you can only fit a soft cover.

I have not had an issue with at full lock rubbing on the guards - I will have a look sometime in the next day or so and report back on how much clearance there is.

Walter, getting pulled up is probably not such of a issue, but how does the insurance company feel about you running tyres that could be deemed illegal.

          Hi Andy,
Go and see Terry at GK Denny Tyres (Fraser Drv, Coffs Harbour
ph: (02) 6652 2544) He drives a Prado with BFG At's, so will be able to answer all your questions. Good bloke, no sales bull either. I'm sure he'll do a trade for your old (new) tyres too.

Not on commission - just a regular happy customer.

            Hi Hutch

Not sure about the insurance company. The vehicle is leased, and insurance is part of the lease. The lease company clearly have the tyres listed as part of the lease since it was one of the options.

So I would like to think I would not have a problem... Mind you I am not going to ask!!!

Just a little comment about the speed differences.
I have BFGs 265/70 x 17 AT's and was clocked by road traffic police at 115 kph in a 110 zone. I was doing 110 according to my speedo on cruise control, (2400 rpm), so that gives you an idea of how much to subtract driving the black top in WA with fully inflated tyres. He let me off with a warning because I was a nurse! Have since backed off to about 107 kph.
                :P
You're here for a good time, not a long time... Love my Prado...

I have done the speedo check using a GPS and found at 100kph it is close to spot on. In fact GPS 100kph = Speedo 102kph.

                    Noticed this one before.

The older Prados used to run spot on with 265/65/17s but with 265/70/17s they run about 6% out ..... mine is spot on 106 km/hr when the speedo reed 100.

The newer Prados seem to read under with the original tyres on and are spot on with 265/70/17s on.

Don't know when this 'change' occurred but we've checked it against the GPS numerous times on ou WA runs .. with a range of vehicles.

Not sure of the age of your Prado Pearlie .... but this is what I would expect from your new ride Andy.

                    Cheers

Given it's a discussion on BFGs, is it

                          tire or tyre

I had BFG AT 265/70/17 fitted this morning, 30 mins after delivery, and there's no scrubbing. I drove straight from the dealer to the tyre place, $550 swap over. Will test the speedo accuracy with my GPS tomorrow.
