  • Tyres

    Hi all,

I am looking to replace my tyres in the next couple of weeks and have been considering, among others, Cooper STT and Goodyear MTR and it seems that many of you on here use these tyres.

Can anyone who has or had them give me some information on what they are like? I am trying to do the impossible and find a tyre that is safe for my wife to drive around on everyday (main issue here is grip in the wet), is aggressive enough for a few upcoming trips and general offroading (Vic High Country, Canning Stock Route) without excessive damage and it not so noisy it will drive us crazy. I expect that any tyre tread will chip somewhat if used in rough, sharp terrain but I don't want to choose a set of tyres that will be destroyed. What is noise like for these tyres? I am not worried by some noise, my existing and quite worn AT's are pretty noisy, just don't want it to drive me nuts.

I have also been considering Mickey Thompson ATZ but there is little information about them as hardly anyone seems to have them. Tyre shops tell me they hardly sell any. These will obviously perform better on road but I am worried about offroad durability.

I have thought about BFG all terrains but there are too many people around (including people I know personally) saying how slippery they can be in the wet.

    Thanks in advance
    Ando

There is info all over this site about the different tyres. For the record I just put a set of the Pirelli Scorpions on mine. It's main use is highway driven by the wife with kids. I wanted a tyre that pulls up in the wet. This car also does a bit of sand work and we do go off-road but not extreme bush bashing. The Pirellis have very strong reviews and the big seller was when I went to the local Cooper dealer, I asked him what he used on his 4WD - expeting Coopers ATR, etc and he said "Scorpions, but don't tell anyone - much better in the wet and don't drop bits off them in the rough". $285/tyre fitted in Townsville.

Having done a search before posting I would not say there is a lot of info. I've found a number of threads discussing who has what tyres and what size but not many that give an opinion on their performance, at least not that I can find.

I would be more than happy to be pointed to threads that provide the information I am after.

well I like my Coopers do a lot of driving on the blacktop and some bush, have no problems with stopping. The guys that fitted them at Sugar Rd tyre and mechanical (Maroochydore) were great. The guy at goodyear when we went there was an ar*ehole. We actually ordered tyres there I changed my work plans ,took it in and they had ordered the wrong tyres. The guy proceeded to abuse me told me I'd ordered the wrong ones and yet he's the one that came out looked at my Prado and told me what I needed. Needless to say I will not recommend them to anyone.
