  • copper muddies any good

I believe that the Cooper STT are now available in 17". Can anyone give me an idea of the noise they create and what the on road trade off is compared to the off road performance is?. I am running BGF AT s and have done a side wall and delaminated one on the plenty highway.

It may be time for a change.

    Mas,

Can't see where you are from but if you are in Oz, have a look at the latest issue (June) of 4x4 Australia which has done a compare that includes STT's against other Cooper treads in 17". They do mention they and the STs are noisier against HTs as you'd expect with that tread pattern but you might be interested also in their off road characteristics.

I run BFG ATs and while they are noisier than the factory tyres, the prado soundproofing is pretty good and you really don't notice it much more than normal road and wind noise.

STT would be noisier compared to BFG ATs. You might also want to have look at GoodYear MTR's... Tread pattern is almost the same as STTs... I run MTRs.

          Mas,

I only use MTR's as a weekend/trip tyre and run Grandtreks around the town. A lot of other people run them as a general AT tyre. You should
expect about 50-60K out of them. The MTRs got one of the stongest sidewalls compared to other tires on the market. The Road handling on wet and dry is very good.... They do get louder with the wear thought.

Also have a look at the exploroz.com regarding tyres.

            Hi Mas ,
I'm running 265/70-17 STT's and i'm very pleased with their overall performance .
There is road noise but it isn't too bad.
Their performance offroad justifies the small compromises i have to do for their road performance.
I 'd suggest them to anyone considering going offroad and specially to muddy terrain.

              Mas,

I run the STT's as my second set of tyres and they are great on the road and off road. The only hting i had to get used to off road was lowering the tyre pressure a little more than I was used to. A mate has a Grade like mine with the ST's and we can barely hear the differance in noise between the two.
And as for side wall strength, you won't get any better in 17's to fit the Prado in my opinion.
