  • NEW Micky Thompson P3's

Hey Guys, Just wanted to know if anyone has bought the new Micky Thompson P3's, I'm currently running the Baja ATZ 4 Rib, and they are a great tyre, but now its time to replace, and they don't make those particular tyres anymore, they have moved to the P3, just wanted to know if they are any good and if there are any other alternatives out there that are just as good.

    Cheers

I looked at them the other day, they were really pushing them $320 each 265/70-17, they look good!
I decided if I was going to get hybrids again, I may as well go Mtz, as the noise is not much difference.
I'm sure they are a great tyre, id say improved from 4rib. Looks like they have improved anti chip & tuffer side wall.
I went for bfg a/t again, it's a Prado, & very happy with bfg a/t, it's the first time I have kept a 4x4 tyre so long & then purchased same again.

If say if you want more aggressive, then don't hesitate, go for it!
Cooper st max it what you would Compare to.

Depends on where you're driving and how often i.e. dirt vs tarmac. MTZ's wear down bloody quick from my experience. What was yours?

P3's are definitely on my list, I would love the MTZ's but after a set on my 200 series i'm scared to spend $400-500 per tyre and have them chopped by the end of 20,000kms.

I've got the opposite problem, should start a new thread about it I guess...

Oct '08 Delivery with ATZ's from the get go. Have 6 of them. Total km's is just under 40k (it only does trips and the occasional quick spin to keep everything operational)

So the tyres are now in their 6th year on the car. Oodles of tread left. Most reckon that tyres lose their performance after a few years and are prone to failure. We haven't had a single problem with these tyres so far, they have been excellent.

Should I keep them or ditch them?

I'd be ditching them, just my opinion. Seems cooper (and presumably MT's) fail after a couple of years. I'm jealous of the amount of KM's. Mine is 24 months old and has 90,000!

If they were going to fail after a couple of years, we'd be on our second or third set.

            Myth busted

My 4 ribs seemed to wear as fast as the other mud tyres I've used. Was not impressed. Both down to around 10mm in 15-20,000klms. That's when I sell them.
I certainly would never spend more than $350 a tyre, thats getting ripped off as it is.
The wear happens early on, after they go hard it slows down, know one 90 series with 120,000klms on his bfg a/t.

For the type of touring & use we do I want new tyres every 2 years at the very outside.
Same as I recommend for you 4x4 used struts & shockers.

              While we are at it,
Safety triangle: tyres - brakes - shockers.

Doesn't matter what brand tyres & brakes you have, they all wear out. Cheap crap faster!
Same with suspension, but you can't see the wear, I don't care if you have bilstein, koni, Monroe, DOBINSONS, or cheap stuff.
They are all worn & well due for rebuild/replacement at 2 year unless your on the blacktop, then it's 80,000klms anyway.
How far do you wear down your tyres? How far do you wear your shockers? Can't see can you?

                ATZ 4 ribs are A/T not M/T.

Anyway, did you wear them down to 10mm in 20k? What are you doing, street racing and burnouts?

Might be a good plan for us to turn them over before they get old again, where do you sell them, do you trade or flog on ebay etc?

No they are hybrids! Neither mud or a/t. well nothing now :-) They were in fact 40/60, the p3 are 50/50.
Vx was saying MUDs (mtz) wear out more quickly, not what I found, Vx asked what I found......

Yes that how most 4x4 tyres wear on my vehicle & they wear very well.
                  Note: I use 4 not 5.
4 mm in 20k not too bad. The st max seem to last longer.
The old 1 kz doesn't do burnouts unfortunately and I cut corners wherever i can safely.

                  Fleabay.

Edit: sorry the way I wrote it, hard to understand me the way I write. Please remember I am illiterate

If your interested tyrepower at Penrith can get hold of the old tread pattern still.
                    I had 4 fitted today 265/70/17
I was looking at he new style but couldn't justify the extra $60 per corner.

thanks for all the info, definatley going to stick with the Micky T's ive got a price on the new P3's that I cant refuse $389 each, my 4 rib atz have been a great tyre, I've done about 60,000kms on them and still have about 15% left. Cooper ST MAXX I've heard mixed reviews about them, ripping of tread in chuncks. Cost of the tyre doesn't really bother me, the way I look at it is that these tyres keep myself and my family safe, you see heaps of people running around with retreads or cheap nasty tyres that might be good in the dry but as soon as there is alittle rain it's like driving on a ice rink. There is definatley a lot of "paying for the name" but at the end of the day your get what you pay for.

MTZ are great if you are in the mud all the time and not on the tarmac much, if your on the tarmac with MTZ all the time, I guess you might aswell throw your wallet out the window aswell.

Thanks again for all the info guys much appreciated.

I have ST Maxx's on my 95 Series & Mickey Thompson MTZ's on my 89 Surf.

ST Maxx's are pretty quiet & stick like the proverbial to a blanket on the road even in the wet.
Been really happy with the added traction & especially chip resistance off road compared to the old Cooper ATR's i had on it.

The MTZ are brilliant off road & will burrow a hole as deep as the Surf in under 5 seconds with the big chunky tread.
On road they are noisy & in the wet they are skittish.
My surf is an 3Y efi 2ltr petrol auto (slug) that gets blown off uphills off sets of lights by B Doubles, yet it has no problems turning them in the wet or wagging it's tail at every roundabout (in slow, out backwards)

Off road mainly, give me the MTZ's anyday.
On road mainly, the ST's are a way better option.

                            Regards, Jason.

Ok, so we have a trip coming up and you guys have spooked me outa my ATZ 4 ribs.

I have 4 P3's going on next week at the best tyre dealer in Adelaide. Will keep the best 2 ATZ's as spares and will think of what to do with the remainder. Might put them on fleabay or give them to a farmer mate who has a Prado.
