I'm about to buy a set of BFG AT tyres to replace original Grandtreks which are 265/65/17. What is most popular tyre size people run for BFG AT. Also what is the availability like of BFGs in this size in remote outback and top end?

I went the 265/70's.( petrol, auto) Little bit more clearance and no rubbing issues even though I haven't had my lift done yet. Fill the wheel wells out nicely
No noticeable difference in fuel economy or acceleration but I'm a pretty sedate driver. Speedo is a little bit out and I had to space the tyre on the back door out a bit so I didn't rub on the paint. Technically they are illegal in some states but so long as your insurance company knows you've got larger tyres I don't see a problem with making claims. Just check and recheck with them and make sure it's in your contract. Plenty of threads here and other sites on different sized tyres, just do a search. I think the availability would be no different in the 17" size tyres maybe a little bit in favour of the 70 profile

The road less travelled is definitely the best road to be on

When i replaced the Grandtreks i rang around and everyone would try and sell me their brand and BFGs from that i took it that everyone carries the BFGs and that was my prefered choice. I kept to the 265/65/17 as it is a popular size that fits many different 4wds so they should be available in most tyre stores around the country. 30,000 kms done and very happy with them2008 Prado VX 3Ltr D4D Auto Dual Batteries , Soverign Bullbar with Avenger Mako TDS9500lbs Winch, Ironman Snorkel, Hayman Reese heavy duty Tow Bar Gme uhf Tx3100, Double din Radio, Gps DVD, Bluetooth , Narva HID Driving Lights , Pedders Trakryder Suspension, BFG A/T, Foxwing, Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller, Alternator Voltage Booster

265/65 or 275/65 will be legal wherever you are, 265/70 are ok in some states but in others will need an engineers certificate.
I think your chances of getting any of those sizes in the outback would be similar, but don't count on being able to get a BFG or any other given brand out bush.
My mate destroyed a 275/65/17 on his 100 series up the cape, he picked up 3/4 worn out second hand tyre of some description in that size from Musgrave, beggars can't be choosers out bush.

Thanks Andrew. really useful information. I want to make sure I don't have any tyre clearance probs with rubbing, and yeah you're right about availability issues in remote locations and may need to take whatever I can (if need arose) to keep on travelling. Thanks mate.
