  • Mickey Thompson or BFG's

Hi all i need a new set of tires for the Prado. i have had BFG's All terrain witch i have got 90'000 k's from them and have been super happy with them.
For the new set i have been looking between another set of BFG's or changing over to Mickey Thompson STZ. what do you guys think of the STZ and have you had any problems with them. also the guy at the shop said i should get about the same amount of k's from them.

    thanks Ryan

I've had them for about 4000km's. Wet is heaps better than the Grandtreks we had. Dirt is much more controlled too. The Dunlops slide a lot. I've never driven in a car with BFG's so can't compare but did hear of a few puncture issues.

If i was super happy and got 90k from a set of tyres I would not change.

Yep, that's a real good price. I paid a little more but mine were 70 profile. 65 was about $355 from a Goodyear Autocare center.

More height, slightly softer ride and more tyre on the track. The bigger the tyre the more grip.

Would love to hear all updates on the MT STZ as they have been out for a little while now. Looking at getting a set myself but might go up in size to 70 series? My '07 Prado VX is completely stock and not sure if I will get any rubbing or problems?
Any pics out there would love to see them on people's rig

I asked the guy at the tyre shop this very question today. His response was about 8mm in height very little if any difference to speedo. I was thinking of going 265/70/17 instead of 265/65/17

With the later model Prado's, 2006 onwards, going to a 70 series tyre will actually make the speedo read just about spot on. From the Factory they read fast, as do pretty much all new vehicles sold nowadays.

For what its worth I am on my third set of BFG's, cant see myself jumping ship next time either.

                          Cheers Andrew

What Andrew said. Mine now reads spot on, a little higher in height and looks better.
This is mine with STZ's 70 profile on Bribie a few weeks ago. Std height and no rubbing.

I stopped using BFG AT years ago as I found them hopeless in the wet. Went to Pirelli Scorpion ATR for a while and then Cooper AT3. Both streets ahead of the BFG on road - especially in slippery conditions. I loved the Coopers and will be putting them on the new truck once the current tyres wear out.
Never owned Mickey T so can't comment on those.
The 120 i bought today (2003) has 265/70/17s. On the freeway driving it back the speedo seemed to be about a km/h slower than GPS at close to 110km/h
                              Cheers, Dave
