  • Tyre speed ratings

    out of the tyres there matt i would go the stt, while they r not a super agressive like a mtz, they r still chunky enough to handle some nice mud. coopers state them as a 70/30 tyre. 70% mud and dirt and 30% on road, they have good road manners and r not noisey as the mudders, its really a personal decision, mtzs are a great mud tyre but they dont have the road holding that an all terrain or a stt have due to the open tread design. it would be s shame to wear a mudder down on road, another set of rims in your case, while most people will give the BFGs a wrap, i can say i had a set on my last 4wd and while they were 70% worn they blew a hole in the side wall of the 2 rear tyres within a week of each other, they didnt have any visible damage from the outside but its scary when ya wife says i had a blowout at 90kmh on the way to work twice. so bfgs r off my list. thats my opinion. as to speed ratings anything rated to 160kmh will be more than enough in aus because ya cant legally do anymore than 130 now. cheers samo

    From memory as long as it's over 110 (fastest legal speed limit) then it's ok

        The Grandcraps are 265/65 x 17.

        The BFG are 160kph as they are Q same as the others.

        Here’s what it all means, using the code for the size P205/65R15 94H and 95H:

        * P – stands for passenger tyre.
        * 205 – this is the section width (in mm) when the tyre is inflated on the standard rim it's recommended for and not under load. The section width is the distance between the tyre's exterior sidewalls.
        * 65 – this is a percentage describing the tyre’s profile or aspect ratio. It’s the ratio between the tyre’s section height (distance from the wheel bead seat to the top of the tyre) and its section width – in this case 65%.
        * R – stands for radial, which is the most common construction method for passenger car tyres.
        * 15 – this refers to the diameter (in inches) of the rim the tyre should be fitted to.
        * 95 is the load rating index and tells you the maximum weight one tyre can carry (in this case it means 690 kg). Other examples: 84 (500 kg), 86 (530 kg), 89 (580 kg), 92 (630 kg), 94 (670 kg).
        * H – this is the speed rating index and tells you the maximum speed the tyre can travel at (in this case 210 km/h). Other examples: S (180 km/h), T (190km/h), V (240 km/h), W (270 km/h).

          G'day, In WA if the tyres fitted to the vehicle are not to spec's as per the tyre information card stuck on your door jam you will not be covered by any insurance if your involved in an accident. I found this out in Novemer when I was rear ended in Perth, the copper went straight to the door jam to confirm the correct fitment of tyres even though I was not in the wrong.
          From memory it states somthing like, this vehicle should not be fitted with tyres with a speed rating of less then ???

            Pradogxlv6 & Team Piggy,
            No offense meant but this is a good example of the Search engine NOT doing it's job, as I can't remember how many times I & many others, have spoken about speed & load rating issues. :evil:

            Again:- LOAD MUST BE THE SAME OR GREATER.
            SPEED NOT LESS THAN 140 km/h

            Believe me there has been a lot on this issue in the past, but try & find it on the search engine :?:

            Hope the Easter Bunny delivered some goodies :wink:

                Pradogxlv6,
                All sounds good but for the diameter difference's, you are allowed to go 15mm above standard.
                Unfortunately a 265/70X17 is approx 24 mm above standard.
                (that ruling may have changed for 4x4's but I have yet to see it in writing)

                Cheers,
