    Dunlop Grandtrek AT20's -- Flicking up stones etc

    Hi all.

    I've noticed some fairly loud "hits" coming from beneath the vehicle on 4 or 5 occasions now since picking up new. The noise is always a very tinny, sharp noise like you'd get from throwing a small stone against a sheet of tin or something, but quite loud. It's happened on long trips and also quick jaunts up the freeway. At first I didn't have a clue what it could be and thought something could be banging around underneath somewhere. Extensive checking bought up nothing amiss that I could see. Now I'm wondering if the Grandtrek's might be picking stuff up from the road and flicking it up into the wheel arches. Very long time since I've had highway tyres like these and am wondering if others are finding the same thing with their AT20's. My thoughts are that the finer tread pattern might be "grabbing" bits of jamf off the road and throwing it off as the tyre spins around.

    Nope not happening with mine and I have done some kms since November. the only drama I have had with rocks is when I was showered with rocks by a donga transporter just before Manahill in SA, damn moron that driver was. Luckily no rocks hit the paint work but my windscreen got peppered and I received one big bullseye right in front of me. I had that repaired in Alice by an Abbot and Costello crew, they did not have a clue what they were doing so I ended up with a half baked job.

      Hi Iron-Paww,
      This happens all the time with my grandtrecks as there is a lot of loose gravel/stones on my local roads, it was even worse with my BFG AT,s they can pick up a quarries worth.

        never really noticed it with the Grandtreks, but definately get more with the new BFGs.

        But if you are worried it is bad, try driving on a gravel road behind someone with Mickey Thompson MTZs - now they flick rocks around :shock: I reckon you'll be convinced that the Dunlops aren't that bad.

        (MTZ and a lead foot behind the V6 makes for a gravel shower - ain't that right, Chippy? :wink: )

          Haha... "Gravel Shower"... I'm adding it to my dictionary. Sounds like a good story behind that ........

          Actually I think some morons intentionally drift off the road and onto the gravel when you are getting ready to pass them. They must think it's hilarious. Hilarious is them with their jocks filled with said gravel........:evil:

          On a recent trip to the Stirling ranges and Cape Riche we travelled over some good gravel roads, nothing with too many loose stones though. I have to say I didn't notice anything then. Except for the usual gravel road noises.

          The noise I'm talking about is a decent metallic hit coming from underneath. Fist one was at the rear somewhere and the next few sounded like they were right up the front. Interestingly all incidents were on bitumen. Only happened about 4 -5 times so far. I'm thinking something like a tyre balance weight or something has been picked up and flung up into my wheel arches. Could be wrong though....... could be frikking dangling wiring harness getting ripped out or something...... But I didn't see anything amiss when I looked.

          Maybe all these years with a tray back I never really had this before. I guess there is quite a bit of stuff underneath the Prado's that can get hit and make this noise. Suppose I'll see how it plays out...... and hope nothing drastic is happening......... :? :? :?
