  • Recommended A/T Tyres

Due for some new boots for the Prado, looking for some All Terrians just wanted to know what brands you guys are running. Leaning towards BFGs or Coopers. Thought about the Goodyears and Bridgestones too just don't know a lot about them. Is there anything out there a bit cheaper that comes recommended?

Depends what you are going to do with them and how much you want to spend, as their all have their own pro's and cons as you will be able to see by the many threads on tyres.

Just quickly..I've got Cooper Discovery AT3 and I think they're great. Little noise and if rotated they wear very well. Bought them second hand but yes I don't think they are cheap?? Main think is, is to stick to the 265/65 profile. Anything bigger and your economy goes out of the window....The fuel you save can go to future accessories ..aftermarket sidesteps = greater clearance..

Ok well mainly on the blacktop but a lot of dirt roads where I live too, plus the odd trip camping and driving down the paddock on the farm. Have done a search and read a few threads, just more interested in what people are actually have got and there opinions. Will be sticking to the same 265/65 profile too.

If your staying mainly on the blacktop you cant really go past a BFG and their are a number of parallel importers selling them cheap at the moment. We sell them legitimately but cant match the "black market" prices..
But if you want a better all rounder that is quieter on the road the Yokohama ATS is a ripper which is what I have on my 150 at the moment..
If you shop around you will always get a good deal like buy 3 get 1 free. Pity you arent here in WA as we are doing the 4th tyre at 50%!! ha ha
We sell a lot of Maxxis now but I dont put them in the same class as a Yokie or BFG. If you go BFG might be worth waiting to the new year for the new model tyre!!

I have been running Bridgestones for many years and been very happy with them. Currently using the 697 A/Ts. They are LT (Light Truck) rated to give a higher load capacity and puncture resistance. Good deep tread, very good in wet weather, quiet running and good handling. I only buy them from Bob Janes as their price is significantly less than Bridgestone dealers. I rotate them every 5000km using a 5 wheel rotation. The main thing is to run tyres your confident with.

my old set were Nexens AT's came with the car, I found them to be very good on road and not bad off road.
I'm currently running mickeys Thompson AT as I wanted a more aggressive tyre after, 6 months still happy.
my mate is running Toyo At on his Patrol and he is very happy with them.
on my previous car I had Bridgestone dueller AT, found them very good on road, not the best off road and scary on wet clay! ( about 5year back, so they have changed a bit since then)
Replaced them with a set of Continental AT again very on road, never got to try them offroad before selling the car.

If you a tyre dealer you trust talk with him otherwise drop in at few and see what they have to offer with there advice.
              hope this helps Pete

05Oiler whats the new load index on the bridgies?
The yokies are 112 and the BFG's are 120 in that size..

I took the bridgies off my GX as they were too noisy.. but they are only 114.. the new ones are more now arent they?

I did a trip with a guy running Nexens, I wouldn't run them on my wheelbarrow!

                  Cheers Andrew

I've had a set of Maxxis 980 for half a year. Done about 20000km on them, majority bitumen, but also quite a bit of higher speed dirt roads, bit of sand driving, bit less mud driving. No complaints traction or wear wise, rotated with the spare a few times.

Got a puncture in the sidewall of one on a sandy track running around 30 psi. While they have a little bit of extra rubber on the sidewall it's nothing compared to the ST MAXX, and I can't help feeling that if I had them I may not have got it, but I'll never know.

The sidewall right where it bulges when aired down (and is most susceptable to punctures) is quite soft to touch, however I knew I'd be going through them quickly over the next 12 months so thought it was worth a try.

They are dirt cheap for a 4wd tyre, which is a bonus, but if I was going remote I'd have to have a hard think about them...

Thanks for all the input, ended up just going with BFGs, bit more expensive but should get a good run out of them

                            Hi All,

I have Cooper AT3's 265/70/R17 fitted and done 40K on them.
They are a great tyre, a little noisy, but really not that noticable considering they are a 70/30 rated tyre.

I went for 265/70 as it corrects your speedo reading, so now 1:1 or reading true, plus it gives you 1" lift over the std 265/65 size tyre.
When fitted to a Prado with 2" lift, this increases to 3".

They are a good All Round tyre, not too aggressive, so still fuel efficient

I believe that is correct on the 'newer' prados however on my 2003, it would have put it badly out of wack, don't ask me why there is a difference?? Fuel economy would still be higher with the larger tyre though. There are a good All round tyre. There is a AT3 specific thread. Possibly not the best for the really serious stuff though...but that's not me....just don't get the time...!!!!
