  • Spare Tyre Size

    Hi Guys

I am from Perth and had fitted about 6 weeks ago a set of Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ P3's a slightly larger than normal size of 265/70/17. Great tyres and very quiet.

My question is they are expensive and I have been told I need to get a spare the same size so it doesn't trip out the traction control/ABS etc. Instead of buying the same, I was thinking of buying the Achilles XMT Mud Terrains as a spare as I can get it for $260 ($200 cheaper than the Mickey). I cant find the overall diameter of them. I know the P3's are 810mm.

Assuming it is only a few mills different, would this work? Keep in mind I only intend to use it as a spare and I dont want a $460 sitting on my car for no use really.

    Any thoughts would be great.

Yes, as long as the 3 numbers are the same, the diameter will be quite similar. There are variations but not as much as a change in 5% of the profile which is what it is when going from a 65 to a 70 profile.

You might need a rear tyre carrier spacer as well.

Thanks for that. I never thought of that. Who or where would I get one?

You should be rotating your spare in with the others as tyres have a limited shelf life even as an unused spare. That will prolong the life of all you tyres.

If you only want a tyre as a "spare" and cost is an issue and you don't intend to rotate it through with the others then buy a second hand mostly worn out tyre, probably plenty of guys on here that would have something still legal and good enough for a spare. Personally I do as Ozpat suggested and rotate 5 tyres.

Fair call but I wouldn't risk anything too worn if heading bush. Not worth it.

                  Cheers Jim.

If your only doing weekend trips not far from civilisation then it might be a good option, but yeah if your going remote then spend the dollars and get a good tyre. Just seems a waste to buy a new tyre just to leave it on the back in the sun so it can deteriorate without being used.

                    Cheers Andrew

I wont be going any where remote. Not yet anyway. Mostly just beach trips and a few areas around the outskirts of Perth. Happy to spend $260 but not the rest. And I I know I am to lazy to rotate them. I am towing a 18ft caravan for two weeks over the break and the last thing I want is to be stuck with out a spare, thats all.

You own a car that would cost $65k or so to replace and you're squabbling over $200 difference in order to match your spare to the other wheels/tyres? Really?
