Repairable or R@@ted

Well my tyres have been used for their intended purpose & performed really well , no chipping whatsoever. On the weekend I backed the trailer up the side of the house to try to tame the jungle that had grown after all this rain. I found that not only snakes had been lying in the long grass but also some rusted dog fence wire. Went to jump in today and had a flat and saw this wire straight thru the inside sidewall. Anyway was getting late and had to to school run. Any advice on whether this would be repairable or not. If not by a tyre shop for insurance reasons , has anyone had sidewalls repaired before. Or have it repaired for a trailer, or keep it only to plant a fruit tree in. Shame as they are 7000km new.😒

Generally sidewall damage is considered a write off, however after my Madigans trip one of the guys who suffered 2 sidewall stakes to his brand new muddies had them professionally repaired, soi guess minor damage can be fixed. You might need to shop around a few tyre dealers to get one happy to do the job.

If the damage is more than a small hole I doubt you would get them fixed.

It's a smallish hole so I'd say take it to a tyre shop and get a pro to look at it. Definitely worth a shot.

Has to go to a decent tyre shop , its not what you can see on the outside that matters so much ,quiet often pieces of wire like can go in a fair way and rub on the inside of the tyre and rub through the cords in the side wall ruining the tyre

While we're on the topic, I've heard that when you plug a tyre (by yourself, not by a tyreshop) that the car's insurance is then voided. Is there any truth to that?

Is that a Toyo Open Country AT2 tyre that was punctured, I thought the new AT2's had 3 ply side walls same as BFG's
I'm looking at the Open Country AT2 for my next tryes might rethink??

My experience from our Madigan trip last September was that you can fix pretty large side wall punctures.
We needed to plug a 3cm cut in a BFG. It took quite a large amount of plugs but got us from the Hay River Road to Birdsville and all the way to Bourke.
On the last day is was slowly leaking so we got it fixed at a tire shop in Bourke and it is holding air since.

From experience I would say that any tire shop in Sydeny would have told me that I need to buy a new one.
So, yes it can be done, if you find somebody to do it (in case you dont plug it yourself) is a different question.

Personally I would plug it, as it looks small, but that is only my opinion.

Thanks everyone for their advice, I definitely won't be throwing it out but I will be ordering a new one cause a number of places refused to fix it being in the sidewall and for safety reasons having two young girls $370 is a small price to pay . Tossed up leaving on the door and just rotating 4 but will get a newie and rotate the 5 to get more kms and repair the dud myself and keep for the trailer or emergency 2nd if touring . Thanks again
