Tyre & Rim sizes for 120 and camper trailer

Hi all, I would like the collective knowledge of you all on tyres and rims for car/trailer combo. I have read that its best to have the same size rim and tyres on a camper trailer as the car pulling it. My 120 has 17” rims with 265/65/17 tyres. My trailer came with smaller 16” rims but 265/70/16 tyres. My question is: does having the greater diameter tyres on the trailer counter it having the smaller rims, and hence balance the equation with the larger rims but lower tyre profile on the Prado?

Supplementary question, would I being throwing things too far out of whack to put 265/70/17 tyres on the Prado?

Overall diameter is within 2mm so for all purposes 265/65 17 and 265/70 16 are the same diameter. The idea of having the same size wheels and tyres is to give you effectively more spares. If you were to stake two or three tyres you could swap tyres to the car to get back to civilisation and get help. 16" rims probably won't fit on the Prado. Also you don't say what the offset of the rims on the trailer are so again they still may not fit or if they are more positive offset than standard they would be illegal. I am running 275/65 17 on GXL alloys all round. Just make sure that your trailer has enough clearance under the guards if you want to standardise on 265/70 17 with Prado rims or equivalent. If you are not planning to use the trailer wheels as spares then you can run different diameters as long as the Prado wheels/tyres are the same and the tyres fit properly on the trailer.

OK great thanks MJ, very helpful. The spares issue makes perfect sense. I'm not sure what the offsets on the trailer are, but I think ideally I'll replace the wheels and tyres on the trailer to match the Prado exactly. It's an off-road trailer so clearance shouldn't be a problem. Thanks again.

Blood hell! I'm looking at getting a trailer/CT and just rung my local Sydney stealership for a price on genuine 120 rims

Steel wheels - $137.50 per rim
Alloys - $1250 per rim!

Spike -I saw a set of 4 genuine 120 alloys on gumtree in Sydney for $900 a few days ago if you're interested. (bit of road rash on some) I'm going to go down the steelie route I think.
(no I didn't. They're gone)

$1,250 each!?! Hmm... $900/set sounds much better, as long as they're not cracked. Thanks for the heads up, I might wander over to Gumtree.

I've read a few articles on steel rims being better than alloys for rough 4WD tracks. Might investigate that option also.

Guys for a 120 have a look for the later GX steelies. Not that much heavier than alloys but same size and offset. Could get these for something like $135 each from dealers. Not sure if there would still be stock. I was lucky and picked up 150 GXL wheels for well under new price through evilbay and scum tree.

The CT we bought last year already had 120 rims on it it belonged to an old PP member so we got lucky

If the 16" rims on the CT has the same or less offset than the Prado rims, then it will fit on the rear axle in an emergency situation.

The trailer has a 16" spare already, so until the current tyres need replacing on the car I'll let it ride. Then I think it'll be an opportunity to replace all for like sizes.

Bit late on the conversation but amts is on the money regards running a 16" wheel on the rear, you only need to do that if you have completely buggered 2 tyres which is unlikely.

I have Speedy Grande wheels on my trailer, they are the same as the factory alloys except they use tapered wheel nuts instead of parallel shank, much cheaper than the genuine wheels and I think I have taken them over enough rough roads to suggest they are plenty strong enough to go the distance.
