  • 120 rim advice

G'day all, new to the site and this is my first post. I've had a look for an answer to my question I'm about to ask but couldn't find anything. Sorry if this has been asked before. Here goes. What is the smallest steel rims diameter and biggest tyres I can fit to my 2006 prado GX 120 series? I'm looking at getting a set of ROH blak trak rims. I want smaller than the factory 17" alloys for beach driving. Thanks in advance

First question, why do you want smaller rims for beach driving?

16" rims might fit if you get the right rim and right offset, you still might need to grind the front calipers which may not be legal. 15" can be fitted if you change to smaller Hilux brakes, that will almost certainly be illegal, not to mention stupid, expensive and pointless.

How big a tyre can you fit, its been asked and answered approximately 1 million and 27 times

32" tyres or 265/70/17 are common place and every second person on the forum runs them. 33" or 285/70/17 tyres can be fitted with more modifications including different offset wheels, and or changed upper control arms and some massaging of the mudflaps and then you still might get some slight rubbing.

You can fit 44" tyres if your budget is big enough, if you have maybe a 100 grand to throw at an artic trucks conversion, which would also probably not be legal in Australia.

    Cheers Andrew

Cheers Andrew. Smaller rims with bigger rubber give you a bigger footprint in the sand wouldn't it? I haven't much room to go much bigger than the 265/65 17" (about 760mm overall diameter) my car has already. Was hoping for smaller rims with tyres about 760mm overall diameter.

If overall diameter is the same I doubt the smaller rim size is going to give any noticeable difference in footprint. If you want or need a larger footprint lower tyre pressures are the simple solution. What pressures do you normally run?

As I said 265/70/17 is pretty common, being a larger rolling diameter they would give a larger footprint and a slightly more clearance, not sure why they wouldn't fit for you. Do you have a flareless GX?

        Cheers Andrew

Like AJ says, drop your tyre pressures and save your money for a decent compressor. Nothing makes beach driving easier than reduced pressures and lower gear selection, even low range when the stuff gets really soft. Flotation is what you need on the beach, not balloon tyres.

Normally run 18-20 psi when on the beach. My Prado is the flareless GX. Just looking at it doesn't seem to be much room for bigger tyres. I will look into the 265/70 tyres. Do you know roughly the outside diameter of those size tyres are? Thanks for your advice Andrew.

At 18-20psi you have plenty of room to go lower, 12psi on some SA beaches is common practice, personally I have been as low as 8psi.

I was in a bit of a rush when I wrote that Eric 👍
When I was looking at tyres a while back the BfG website said 806 mm for the 265/70/17 AT.
And Mickeys and Dick Cepek are both 810mm. Basically the same tyres.
