  • 16" Wheels on 120 Prado

    All,
Before i start- have done a search, there are lots of opinions and answers, i hope to add this thread as a location for the correct info.

I know for a fact that 16" Dynamic steel wheels with 0 offset fit on a 120 series prado, i had them on mine for a few months.
I would like to know if anyone is running 16" alloys at all, and if so; can you please post photo and/ or details of what you have.

im going to change back to a 16" alloy when my current tyres are done.

Can anyone also confirm why this would not be legal, im basing my information on the 120 standard GXL rim being a +25 offset and the QLD vehicle standards allowing a 51mm change in wheel track. 0 being the biggest change possible (50mm).

thanks for your replys, mods please delete any off topic replys as i dont want this to be another one of the useless threads that came up in my search.

    Thanks,
    Scott.

120 offset is +30 so you would be increasing track by +60 which isn't legal. Other than that I don't think there is a problem as long as the tyres remain within the guards and don't foul on any suspension components and you keep to the overall diameter limits (+50 OD).

Thanks for the reply, not trying to disagree, just hoping to find the correct info. The data i found earlier suggested that the GXL steel wheels were +30 but that the alloys are a +25, does anyone have a source / link to confirm?

As amts has posted all the 7.5 120 wheels were P30 whether steel or aluminium which is why they aren't legal on the 150s. You say you are going to go for 16s, why?

current thinking is cheaper tyres, lighter wheels, better flex in the side wall when aired down. but all depends if i find some that fit nicely

I think you will find that the 17s in a 70 profile will do everything you want but obviously your call.

You make a good point, quick calc:
                285/75 r16 Converts to 32.8" = 833mm - Side wall of about 213mm
                285/70 r17 Converts to 32.7" = 830.5mm - Side wall of about 200mm
Therefore only an extra 13mm of side wall to baloon or flex, isnt that much when you think about it.

                Price comparison:
                285/75 r16 Summit Mud Hog - $235 each
                285/70 r17 Summit Mud Hog - $250 each

                Weight:
17" is 106% the size of a 16" whats 6% when talking about a rim...wouldnt add that much to unsprung weight really.

MJRandom, you may have just talked me back out of the 16...i also like that fact that the distance between calliper and wheel on a 17" is just that little bit more...
looks like im back to waiting for the Speedy Territory in 17"...
                Cheers,
                Scott.

Grab some new FJ rims via the interwebs. P15 to give you a wider track and a good looking wheel too. I would try to go this way if I didn't need 8 of the suckers.

                    Like this.....

They fit great and are just inside the guards, I have the 265 65's on but planning on 265 70 KM2's very soon.

Given you need more rubber for the same tyre diameter, while the rim will be a little lighter there would be little difference in the total rim/tyre package me thinks, not impossible to weigh a little more even.
