  • RELIABILITY ISSUE - 120 series alloys.

    Story time,

This is a little info for you that could save you a big pain it the asssssss
It has come from my experience on my & other vehicles, not just a theory or idea.

THE PROBLEM IS THOSE FANTASTIC STAINLESS VALVE STEM/body the 120 alloys have.
They have no flex at all. A rock has had a dance about my wheel & hit the valve.
It bent the threaded section, which was then pushing on the valve dik letting air out.
The plastic cap was rammed in amongst it as well. With some mud.

I have seen these get ripped off before.
    They are $30ea.
I'd suggest if you are an offroader or an outback traveller, get you fixed steel valve stems removed & fit standard rubber ones that would likely easily flex away from harms way.

    Prevention is better than pain.

6 and 1/2 years of bashing about off-road and my alloys are stone - chipped to buggery. But never had an issue with the valve stems. Something else to check on now.

Anyway I was only 15 minutes late
Or spend $30 and carry one for that uncommon occurrence. Thanks for the reminder.

Then you need tyre leavers etc to fit one. Not many people carry them.

But I like those solid metal valve stems. They hold my tyre pressure sensors away from the rims. Rubber ones flex and let the sensors rub and leave marks. I guess I'm at even more risk of damage with the big fat sensor caps on the end of the stems. Still I love the peace of mind my tyre pressure sensor system gives me against slow leaks and blow outs when outback touring.

In our hot environment, the OEM metal valves are the way to go. One needs to replace the rubber valves every few years here, and now I have to replace them on my Jeep as they are in a very fragile state.

The only problem I've had with the mags on my 120 Prado is corrosion on each wheel. Unfortunately Toyota decided the issue wasn't covered by the extended warranty I'd bought.
