  • 120 Prado Suspension and Tyre Set-Up

I'm about to do a little upgrade on an 04 Prado 120. I'm currently looking at the Toughdog 40mm/2inch (approx) suspension lift kit and changing the tyres to a 265/70/17 on the stock rims.

I'm keen to find out if this will work or if there are better options (particularly on the tyre options...there is a heap of choices out there).

Yes it will work. 265/70R17 will also fit without a lift. Just very minor rubbing depending on the tyre pattern.

That's actually what I'm trying to avoid but I can see your point of the minor scrubbing. Thanks for that!

How much affect does the 265/70/17 have on auto v6 driving ? Over 265/65/17

It is only very minor and some don't experience any rubbing at all.

There's a small loss in performance and fuel efficiency.

With 265/70/17, I found the speedo to now be accurate. With factory spec tyres, it was under recording by about 4-5km's at 100kph.
Some rubbing on the front at full lock with standard suspension, otherwise no issues. Subsequently had a 2" lift (Kings/Bilstein) and now there is no rubbing.

              I'm running Cooper AT3's.

My 265 70 17 has the speedo reading the wrong way.. EG at 110 by speedo Im doing 114/115 (by GPS)... 57 on speedo is 60 by GPS too.

Maybe the earlier 120's had more accurate speedos than the later models. Mine is spot on now with the 265/70/17's

Thanks for the feedback guys. If there is no rubbing after the 2" lift, 265/70/17 looks like an ok option.
People are saying that it would be ideal to run a 33" set-up but I cannot find much info as to what combinations has been put together.
Simple set-up is in order for now...

To go 33", the most common size is 285/70R17. For this you will need different offset rims of less than +20. Then you will need to consider the other side effects like speedo error, loss in acceleration and braking performance, higher fuel consumption. But you do get more diff clearance.

My 2003 120 Series prado has exactly this (2" lift, 265/70/17 Cooper AT3)
Awesome with no rubbing, ( Currently Looking at replacing two of my tyres due to wear <80K on them> BFG TA KO2 or Cooper AT3???)

Drives on the road really well and magic to handle all of road environments (Although I have not been on a beach)
                        have fun !!!!!!
Bitumen is boring, at least it can get you to the next off road adventure
