  • Steel Spare - Alloy Nuts

Just picked up a steel spare rim to take away as a 2nd spare.

I won't get a chance for a couple weeks to test, so asking the question here re wheel nuts.

Will i be able to put the steel spare onto the car if needed with the standard alloy nuts? Or do i need to get a spare set of nuts to suit the steelie?

    cheers

Toyota steel wheel? Are these the wheels nuts you have?

    All good.

Sorry, as usual leaving critical detail out.

yep Factory GX rims (not sure what era - i believe they got wider around 2006? but 17 inch steel Prado factory rims).

ummm haven't had a nut off to check. so that pic is a nut that does both tapered and flat face? Cool!

The factory alloys use the flat face while the steel wheels use the taper. You could pick up specific cone nuts but I used these for years when I had a 120. I have steel (dynamic) spares for my trailer and camper and use these factory nuts when needed.

Go to your local tyre retailer. They often have buckets of wheel nuts. You will need some tapered ones.

Not sure about 'need'. For the purposes the OP has stated the factory nut will be fine and will obviate the need to carry 6 or 12 other wheel nuts. Might look a bit odd but will be perfectly safe. If you do decide to get specific nuts for the steel wheels then be aware some of the dome style nuts will bottom out on the stud before the wheel is fully tightened. Make sure the nut will run all the way to the hub without the wheel on. You can generally walk home safely from the pub with the wobbly boot on but not so sure about the wobbly wheel.
