  • Interesting tyre wear info

I was just flicking through a “Max Ellery” workshop manual and found the following info in the tyre section.

Thought some of you might find it interesting.

“Tyres driven with ¾ recommended air pressure have only ½ of the suggested tyre life”

“Friction is proportional to velocity cubed. Double your driving speed, 8 times the wear, or driving speed increased from 100 km/h to 120 km/h doubles tyre wear”

more friction also means more power needed = more fuel burnt.. I have experianced greater fuel use if the tyres have less than 40psi in them.

But if you increased speed the Tyre would increase in the center thus decreasing the Tyre wear due to the small contact area. Would it not?

In theory yes, but without doing the math the increase in speed would need to be a "ell of a lot" to turn the additional centrigual force into expanding rubber to offset the car's weight and added down force due to wind force over the upper body (bonet & roof)

So what pressure do you guys run your tyres at for Highway, Sand, Etc.

I have the CrapTeck's at the moment and will be changing them soon, however the plackard on the door of the prado says,

190kPa or 200kPa (27-29psi) which to me seems to low.

                    Matt.
