    Re: Pirelli Scorpian ATR..prices

Had mine now for over a year. Have no problems with them at all....I got 80k out of the original Grand Treks, I now have 164k on the clock and the Scorpions still look like they have a further 40-50K plus in them....low noise great grip in the wet and on dirt running at 40psi.

        Re: Pirelli Scorpian ATR..prices

I have just come back from the PPGTG after putting new Pirelli Scorpion ATRs on the car and thought I would share my experience. Firstly let me say that the use of the car is predominantly onroad touring (dirt & bitumen) but it does see some offroad work around the Flinders Ranges and other similar areas. For this reason I was biased towards an ATR rather than an MTR.

So what I bought was the Pirelli Scorpion ATR LT265x70x17. They have a speed rating of S (only LT that does that I could find) and a load index of 121 so they meet the specifications of the existing tyres. The only exception is that they are about 26mm over diameter and as such need to be certified on my vehicle in certain states. With the standard Grande suspension these tyres do not rub on any steering or chassis components but do catch the trimmed plastic inner guard down near the sovereign bar. This was "fixed" with a bit of sculpting of the plastic with a pair of scissors.

On the road the tyres are very quiet with a noise level similar to that of the standard AT20 Grandtreks that came with the vehicle. Steering and brakeing response on bitumen in both wet and dry is excellent and that annoying squeal of the Grandtreks when cornering is now gone :-) Off the bitumen they performed well on high speed dirt (Ooodnadatta track) with good turn in and road holding. The tyres also performed well on badly corrugated roads (Merrenie Loop, Dalhousie and Old Ghan Line) with no major issues. I did notice some fine cuts in the tread but nothing I wouldn't expect from the roads we travelled.

Tyre pressures we used: 38psi on bitumen, 29psi on dirt, 25psi offroad.

I don't have a tread depth gauge so can't tell you what the wear is like other than by just looking at them. Visually I would expect to get 50k-60k out of them but distance may vary depending upon use. I'll check with the dealer when the car goes back for its free 5k inspection / alignment.

Now the question I guess I haven't covered, $349 each fitted and balanced for 5 tyres from Bob Jane (Pulteney St).

Hope this helps other when considering these relatively unknown tyres against the more popular brands.

        Cheers

        Gaz

          Re: Pirelli Scorpian ATR..prices

Had the tyres checked and rotated today after 5500km and also got tread depth measurements done. Tread depth when new was on average 14mm and after the journey in the previous post the average is now 13.5mm. Based upon that I would expect to easily get 60000km out of the set and probably quite a bit more if regularly rotated.

          Cheers

              Re: Pirelli Scorpian ATR..prices

I have done my research, and think that the Pirelli Scorpion's (ATR) are the way to go, but I'm not sure whether to go with the raised white lettering or not. Anyone got any photos of theirs on their rig?

I'm looking at getting them in the next 14 days ($330 from Jax, Philip, Canberra), so any photos showing what they look like on a 120 series would be greatly appreciated.

              Thanks,

I had no idea this was an option - I am getting mine next week - is this an extra cost?

To get the white lettering, there is only a few dollars in it (less than $10). Are you getting 265/65/R17?

Just got 5 tyres done yesterday

One word is quiet - they feel sticky and as if they are able to stop the car if required.

Got a deal for $1451 for the 5 (trading in old one) so I am happy so far.

Got a picture or two of them on your rig? (a closeup and a full Prado view would be useful). 8)

Did you end up getting the white lettering?
