  • LT 265/65/17?

    Hi All

Does anyone know of any 265/65/17 done in a LT construction. From the research I have done, it appears the answer is no.............but more sets of eyes and ears are better than one.

My preference is a 265/70/17 but I have been having issues with the pregnant one in regards to the continued fitment of the hard spare wheel cover. I am toying with the idea of cutting slits in it so that it may expand around the larger dia tyre. Anyone tried this?

Am needing a change after becoming a member of the 'Cooper ATR Explosion Club', although can't complain too much after 47,000 km with a far bit of that being shared between Gibb River Rd and Savannah Way.

    Cheers, Rhet

A tyre joint here in Adelaide done at Lonesdale was recently recommending the General Grabber AT2. He was saying to me that the 265/70R17 are illegal but there would be no issues with 265/65/R17. He also mentioned that there may be insurance issues with the larger tyre.

I spoke to my insurance company and they had no issues with the larger tyre. Who needs the hard cover?

            What constitutes a LT construction?

The General Grabbers AT2's that I found on the the Simex website states the load rating was 112, as are the 694's I believe (correct me if I am wrong).

I was under the impression that the LT construction of load rating was up towards the 120+ mark??

I could be wrong but load rating is one thing, LT contruction is based around number of plys in the tyre, ie 6, 8, 10 ply. The load rating normally increases with a LT but i also think this is not always the case.

Yes LT is more to do with the construction of the plies, not (just) load rating. Take for example the BFG AT in 265/70 size. It's available (at least in the USA) in a 112 and also a 121 load rating, both being in LT construction.

Yep, that makes a bit more sense.

Cheers for all of the responses.

I have a 2003 model 120 GX with the cheese cutter rims fitted with Cooper Discoverer ATR 235/70/17s which I had replaced with the wider alloy rims fitted with BFG 265/70R17s which I have now found out is illegal. To keep them, an Engineer told me I needed to fit a speedo calibrator ($400) and get a sticker for the lower R/H windscreen showing the lower speed rating, then get an Engineering Certificate ($300) and, of course, notify my Insurance company. I now face 1. Keep driving on them until they wear out and hope I don't get into trouble or anything happens, 2. Sell the tyres/rims and go back to the cheese cutters, 3. Sell the tyres off the rims and get the BFG 265/65/17 (preferred option) which I now know are available (a bit late!) or 4. Get the calibrator and certificate...a spend of $700 as it is. An that's if the Engineer doesn't find anything wrong! I got into this mess by one of my local tyre shonks who fitted the rims/tyres. When I rang them, a bloke told me to change the tyre placard!! I told him it'd be illegal, and he said yes! I said "No Way". He wanted to see the receipt for the purchase, so I drove there and they contacted their boss who said they never heard of that situation before and said the tyres were perfectly legal! What to do?

The 70 profile tyres are only legal with engineering certification. The legislation currently only allows and increase of +15mm (and -25mm) on overall tyre diameter from factory. There are plenty of people running this but strictly it isn't legal. There is talk of a national code of practice which allows for a +50mm increase for off road vehicles but this is not in force and despite the optimism there is no indication it will be passed soon. I have been hearing that the implementation of the code of practice is imminent for the last 3 years. I cannot recall if the early GX tyre placard states that 265/65 17s are an option or not, better check because even that size is more than +15mm compared with the standard GX wheel/tyre combination. Not sure about the speed rating though because the BFGs in 65 profile are the correct speed rating or higher from memory. Before you go to the expense of engineering have you fitted flares to the guards? Without flares I doubt you will get an engineering certificate because the tyres 'nominally' protrude past the edge of the guards and this is not legal and cannot be 'engineered' so there is an added cost for the flares. Having said that there are plenty of earlier 120 GXs running the wider tyre without flares. I know this is in reponse to the police query about the lift that is mentioned in another post but it seems as though you will need to make sure your car is legal in case you have a further enquiry that isn't so polite.

I just had BFG s fitted in LT 265 65 17. Cost me $343 each. Had to wait about six weeks for them.
