How do we go for street legal on the 265/70R17 though? The guys at Discount City tyres in Eliz tell me that i can only go up by 2%, but the 70 series is 3 and a bit percent??

I saw a Grande with the 245 Mickeys, and they seemed to fit ok on the standard rims.

No idea if it is legal to reduce the width, but it does work. Probably costs a bit of flotation in the sand, and may have some effect on handling on the bitumen.

245 are a direct replacement for the 265 Dunlops as the MT are wider on the tred and you need to go slightly narower to reduce posabilities of paint damage.
Mine fit extremly well and the 5 ribs are much quiter than the 4 ribs. 4 ribs in my experience chip and crack at 3000 km and are stuffed by 20,000km but this is all off road work around station tracks in Nth Flinders. The 5 rib are more puncher resistant due to narower block pattern. MTZ didnt last 15,000km before going flat. the best was a rock the size of a boot that came for a spin in a MTZ.

All there were on a 70 series, same driver same tracks over the last 3 years. The best were the 5 rib whch are still going at 30,000 on all four corners.
Very little chipping as well but the tread has suffered lots of cuts and bruisers.

As good as the older Grandtrek AT1 avaialable.

I paid $352 I think for my 6th one not too long ago. This was from Bridgestone at Flinders Park. I know it's a long way from your home Jason but if that is the tyre you are after and Scott Robinson can help you on price then it's probably worth it. Scott's Bridgstone is not a Corporate outlet. He is independent under the Bridgies banner.

Unfortunately time and distance has gotten the better of me . I am paying $380 each and I dont really care as it is just around the corner from work and easy for me to drop the truck off while the wife is away. Probably could have saved myself a few dollars by looking elsewhere but I have to work to my limitations.

Cheers Nick, ill give them a call. I made the mistake of only calling their national dealer network.

Thanks Babs, I didnt have much luck on negotiations anyhow. My next decision was the BFG AT in the 70 series which I could get for around 350-360. Catch you at the SA GTG.

After 9000kms and a rotation I thought I would post some comments on my ATZs

In June 09 I took these upto the Bendleby Ranges in SA and run these at about 26psi. Worked a treat and could not fault them. On returning there was no real issues or damage to the tyres.

In August 09 we did Oodnadatta, Simpson, Birdsville Track, Walkers Crossing, Innaminka, Bore Track, Cameron Corner, Tiboburra, Broken Hill and home. Tyre pressure was 26 up Oodnadatta to Dalhouise and then down to 18 across the desert (but dropped to 14/16). After Big Red we hit up to about 28 back to Birdsville and then stayed on this unto Broken Hill.

Had them rotated on Saturday and the four tyres that have done the 9k had dropped from 14.5mm tread depth down to 11mm. The rear tyres had been damaged a fair bit with cracking and damaged to the edge of the lugs but mainly on one tyre.

I'm happy with how these tyres have performed. I'm happy with how they look and sound but I'm disappointed with how quick they have worn. It could be that the rubber compound was still a little too soft and needed to harden up. I believe MickL had a similar issue with his MTZs where the wore very quickly in the first 5k but I believe since then have slowed a lot in the wear rate.

I'll see how these go over the next 10k and report again. Not sure if I would go these again. That's really up to how they perform over the next 10k. There is still plenty of life in these even though they have worn about 1/3rd of the tread depth in 9000kms. If I only get 30k out of them then I would be really pissed.

Good informative report...concerning with the damage and cracking but you would have to say that was a good test for them for certain :!: 8)

I will be buying a set and still tossing up between the 4 rib Mickeys, the MTZ's or possibly the Coops.

With the cracking it was reasonably minor and isolated to the rear tyres. We where loaded to the max. Four people, about 100ls of water, additional 20l of diesel, additional tyre, carton of beer, food, fridge, drawer system, cooking gear including gas stove and bottle, recovery gear, tents, sleeping bags, clothes, etc... I'm sure we exceeded the weight limit of the vehicle so I can understand that they wore reasonably quick. You could also argue that sand is soft and wouldn't damage the tyres or it is abrasive and could wear them quickly. I'll see how I go in another 10k. Looks like there might be about 3k coming up soon over the Eyre Peninsula and out to a mineral sand mine and maybe a play on Googs track. Just hope it's not too hot but then head down to Coffin Bay for some more fun.

If I was not to grab another set of ATZs then I might consider MTZs although a lot noisier. Another option would be the Procomp Extreme All Terrains. In my opinion the ATZ fits into the same category as the Procomp Extreme AT while a Cooper ST or BFG AT fits into the same as the Procomp AT
