    Bad Wheel Alignment or is it all Prado 120s ?

    Hi,

    Im fairly new all of this. I own a 120 Prado GXL Petrol and have worn the original tyres in less than 30,000kms! (My old Prado 90 series did 100,000kms before I changed tyres!!!!)

    I have fitted Cooper ATR 265/65/17 (after reading this forum) and am really happy with everything except that the front left outside shoulder is still wearing badly. I have taken the Prado in twice for a wheel alignment but still the same .

    Just wondering if anyone knows of a wheel alignment setting (or other fix) that will cure this problem once and for all???

      Common problem?
      My previous Prado 90 series was good at scuffing off the outside shoulder LHF tyre no matter how many times alignment etc checked.
      Most others of my previous cars same probs...

        G'day Steve, Great to see another name on PP.
        I found an increase in tyre pressure to about 38 to 40 psi reduced the scuffing. Unfortunately, the scuffing of the outside left is common on most vehicles; apparently due to the excess pressure as we turn left into and then out of roundabouts ... makes sense when you think about it. But to answer your question; i've not found the Prado any worse on tyres than any other vehicle.

          Yay another double thread....

          Steve. Welcome to the forum.
          Can you please place your location in your profile so we all know where your from.
          Forum rules and guidelines are located in my signature line.

          There is a couple threads existing on tyre wear and this issue.

          I suggest:
          1: Get rid of grandtreks.. 30 k is about average life of them.
          2: Decent wheel alignment. (Again threads here have info on settings)
          3: Rotoate tyres at maximum every 5000 kms.
          4: Get better tyres! D694 or similar for highway, or read threads to go thru other choices.

              Rhs58, The old 90 series was a great vehicle. Sometimes I feel sad that I let her go - much better off road, better fuel economy, much better on tyres etc. I cant remember the 90 scrubbbing the shoulders excessively though, maybe less power meant much less wear on the tyres around those roundabouts.

                Hi Bear,
                I run 42psi at the front and 40psi at the rear. I find it a little harder on the ride side of things but less squeal around bents and better control. I guess 2 odd tonne of truck will wear softish tyre quicker than a small car!!

                  Team Piggy,
                  Got rid of the Grandtrecks -wear quickly but were very quiet and gave a really smooth ride that the missus enjoyed. Put on a set of Cooper ATRs and this made the 120 feel much more like the old 90 but more refined
                  Still trying to ascertain the best alignment settings from the thread that Crammy found. And Ill try to rotate the tyres every 5000kms, I usually do this every service at 10000kms. Wish me luck!

                    Toe-In

                    One Word

                    Toe-In = 0 , or as close as possible . mine is been kept at 0.11 since Fazza suggested that

                    For information : my AT20 were gone at 19K! and Toyota said it's fine

                    Team Piggy gave you a very accurate suggestion

                    But read through the threads for better results , my Scorpions had done 45K and looks that I can pull another 45K on them

                      Don't put up with scrubbing. Prados should not do it. The round about theory is put about by Toyo to confuse and excuse. Gts went in 30000 kms for me. I was happy to get rid of them. Cooper ATRs gave better ride, no squeal and way better wear, as reported by others. A good alignment from someone other than toyo is also called for. I would be cautious about 40 lbs in the front. Sounds like about 4 or 5 lbs too much.

                        I still do not know why it is that some folks only get low kms out of their GT's yet others like myself are getting high kms with the tyres still having plenty of meat on them?

                        I am wondering if the low wear can be attributed to city driving, lots of cornering, continuous stop start driving?

                        Most of my kms have been open road driving and at 45,000 kms they still have heaps of meat left on them. I reckon I will get close to 70 or 80,000 out of them mores the pity.

                          Suburban driving is hell on front tyres.
                          Mav, you will never wear out those GT's when you are driving 1000klms in a straight line.

                            Hi all,

                            Most - no nearly all of my driving is city. Lots of stop and go and lots of short trips. I guess straight line driving is less stressful on the tyres.

                            Just a thought......do tyres wear out quicker if they are not at operating temperature????

                              Thanks Mansour the threads suggests that a 0 toe is the best for wear too.

                              I had a browse through the thread on wheel alignments and summarised if for my wheel aligner. Ive booked in to see him on Friday for the third time. I just want this fixed. No other Toyota I have ever owned has been this troublesome.

                              Oh, did I mention that Toyota have machined then replaced front rotors and machined rear rotors due to brake shudder also ??
