  • Legal Tyre Size - Approved

    Hi there,

I'm wanting to increase the size of the tyre on the car but wanted to make sure I was covered with insurance etc.

Insurance companies only insure you if it meet Government regulations.

I eventually got onto Vic roads and they'll normally tell you you can go 15 ml bigger. I mentioned it was a 4WD and they then said 50 ml.

The bloke directed me to this site from the Government so now i have it in writing.

In the first link, you need to go to NCOP11, page 16.

I hope I'm right. Now I can go Fully Sick.......

Re: Legal Tyre Size - Approved

Dont blame me if you put bloody tyres on your car and your insurance company wont pay. Not my problem.

One other thing i've since found out is the OD reading error, which I knew would be out, but apparently Tyre mobs dont want anything to do with it should you get larger tyres etc for this reason.

To get a straight answer from your insurance company isn't that easy. I actually sent off an email to them telling them what I wanted to do re increasing tyre size, gave tyre sizes, and they came back all good.

I think I'll just chuck on a couple of cheese cutters......

As for your can of worms, not bad, might take a few of those fishing.

Sefo it might be a good idea to read the complete document as you will find it states something about the "relevant local authority" determines legality etc.

That document doesn't actually say it applies in all Australian states and Territories. I know it doesn't apply yet in QLD.

Hence the can of worms earlier
