  • Swap New BSA OE Style Rims for Speedy Replicas (tapered nut)

I recently purchased two new BSA (AU-625) alloy rims which are identical to the 120 alloy rims (17"x7.5") - these rims have the flat nut bed the same as the OE rims and for all I know BSA manufacture these rims for Toyota... I can't tell the diff, though I do have a few beers under the ever disappearing belt.

To cut a long story short, I want to use these on a trailer which has 1/2" studs so I can't use Toyota wheel nuts (they're metric N12x1.5). As they Speedy ones have the tapered nut I can get 1/2" nuts to suit and fit to the trailer no probs. Yes, "just change the studs you say... long story, like I said).

Thought I'd throw it out there to anyone who has new Speedy tapered nut type rims who has a preference for and would like to swap for the new OE style rims I have just purchased. I have a 3rd rim also but is not new (has a few scrapes) so could do up to 3 rims if needed.

Needs to be in Brisbane so minimal mucking around.

Moderators, not sure if this needs to be moved to the 'Wanted' section - please move if appropriate.

    Thanks
    Wanna

Well, no need to think about changing rims or modifying hubs now. Got onto GalPro Engineering in Adelaide (http://www.galproeng.com.au/) who manufacture Prado nuts in any thread configuartion needed as well as a host of other bits and pieces which will come in handy. So I now have a handful being made up in a 1/2 inch thread. Price worked out to be much the same as buying genuine nuts too.

How are you going to center the rims on the trailer hubs? The Toyota style nuts don't center the wheel on the hub, you would normally need a machined boss on the hub to center the wheel.

Great question there, Kevin. If the PCD is right then the wheel studs will do a reasonable job. However, I'm going to measure up the hubs and rims and get a centering boss made up for both hubs. I've already spoken to GalPro about this. I'll get down to the trailer place on Thursday with some calipers and get the numbers I need, then only a few days to make up.

I will be interested in how you go. I have been investigating putting the Prado factory alloys on my camper and have come to the conclusion that it is just too hard. VC quoted me that were trying to do this for someones caravan and it was going to cost an extra $600 in machining to get the hubs to match the rims.

I'm very interested in the outcome of this as I am also planning to fit Prado alloys to my camper trailer

In short, it didn't... not because it can't but because I've been stuffed around royally.

All came to a head to a head today after being told by Galpro on Friday that they still hadn't finished my 1/2 wheel nuts. Given they assured me it would take no more than a week and a half to have them done (Chrissy rush etc etc) it has now been 3 weeks and I've cancelled the order today... I don't have time to be stuffed around. Every time I've called I'm told they're done but need to go to the platers. One thing I can't stand is people blowing smoke up my arse!

So, anyone want to buy 2 brand new BSA (AU-625) Prado rims and one used rim (clear coat rubbing off in some spots)?

Also, I expect Galpro will have a nice new shiny set of 15 1/2 inch wheel nuts to suit a Prado on their shelves in a few weeks if anyone is interested.

Bugga, where did you buy them and for how much, I just want them for an Off road camper trailer that I am halfway through building.

                      Best regards
