when are tyres worn out ??

I have a 2004 gxl with the original grandtreks having done 45000k's. They are down to 4mm over most of the tread except for about 30mm on each corner where they wore out as we kept them inflated to factory spec.bumped it up to 38 psi about 12 months ago and they seem to stopped wearing so fast. my question though is when do they become illegal. At 1.5 mm all over or is there a limit to how much is at legal depth vs worn out.
As to replacements has any one got any recommendations for brand and price/dealer here in perth.
I searched through tyre forum but couldnt find any info.

check out the groves in the treads as there is a little block between them in set places on the tyre. When they hit that marker they are gone, usually there are little triangles on the side wall to show you where they are across the treads.

Old Coin Test. :idea:

Take a ten cent and place it the most shallow tread groove with Queens head down. See the top of her head? :shock: The tire should be replaced.

Ahhh, the eternal debate - like holdens and fords. There really is heaps of advice/comment/opinion/debate on the forum about brands - it might take some sifting through but it's there - it's mostly about a balance of the type of driving you are planning, budget and personal choice. I made my decision after checking every Prado I saw in every carpark and watching what others could and could not do on our WA PP trips. Search, and ye shall find :mrgreen: .

....price/dealer here in perth.

I recommend starting with getting prices from Midvale Tyres and then compare and bargain from there.

Thanks for that. still got a bit of wear left but SHMBO is concerned that since the edges are worn down that we need new tyres.
Ill give midvale a ring on Sat, their not far from my place.

I suppose there is also the question of legal or useful. If you're heading offroad then they might still be legal but probably wont offer much grip off the bitumen.

Well my Grandtreks still have about 5-6mm of tread with a bit of feathering around the edges so technically they are still fine and legal but I've noticed recently their grip is really starting to go (especially through wet roundabouts :shock: ) so I'd consider mine to be worn out. I'm also planning a decent trip over xmas so I'm replacing them. I'd rather get rid of them with tread still on them rather than wait for a puncture or a stack.

A friend of mine waited till his were down to the tread wear indicators (which is the legal minimum) and they looked downright scary to me.

Actually this is interesting...
The other month I was driving my wife's car (Honda Jazz) and lucky me drove over a trucks mud flap (mounting bolts and all) and the front tyres which were reasonably new went straight over them whereas the rear tyres which were due to be replaced punctured quite badly. So badly by the time I got to work... about 6 klm's they were quite flat. (beyond repair I found out later).
Couldn't imaging worn out Gradgraps handling a bush track with all those staking ops to well.

I was recomended ELDORADO tyres by Continental. Has anyone had any experience with them
