  • Toyo Open country

Gidday, i buggered around for several weeks checking out different tyre brands to replace the OEM grandtreks on my 07 petrol and finally decided on Toyo Open country H/T. Coopers seem great until you have a problem and also the mileage warranty is fine so long as you are prepared to get the vehicle alignment checked regularly and even then most threads state issues trying to claim against coopers. I have also had success with the Yokohama Geolanders on a Mitsi challenger with good tread left after 70ks and also good results for around the same mileage when fitted to my previous 96 3.4 lt Prado.

Once i decided i checked around various tyre power stores for the best deal and ended up paying $1020.00 fitted, balanced and a wheel alignment thrown in.

The tyres are really quite on road and with the large grooves seem very good in the wet and so far i am very happy with them. Mostly i drive on black top with occassional dirt so these tyres suit. Tyre pressures are 40 PSI.

    Cheers

    Re: Toyo Open country

    Hi Wazza,

I'm curious about the Toyo tyres also. I have just purchased some Toyo Open Country 265/70/17 A/T's in LT construction as a second set of wheels for an up coming Central Australian trip. ($310 each) Info from the seller (who appears to be one of Mikey Thompsons' major outlets) is that the Toyos' are right up there with the good tyres and that some of the current Mikey Thompsons' are chipping quitle badly. Not having much experience with 4by tyres I wouldn't be able to offer an opinion but I've used a lot of Toyos' on several passenger cars in the past few years and cannot fault them. Time will tell with the 4by tyres....
I'm currently running Hankook 265/65/17 H/T tyres for my city tyres (they came with the Prado when I purchased it) and I certainly have no problems with them either.

I'd be curious to see if anyone else has any experience with Toyo Open Country, either H/T or A/T. I haven't seen much on this forum about them.

    Cheers

      Re: Toyo Open country

I had Toyo Open Country on my 95 series, was not too impressed with the wear, but in their favour I was slack with my rotations and they certainly were not LT construction. I also destroyed one on the road into Dingo Beach near Proserpine, don't know what happened but it was not repairable. I would possibly buy again in LT construction I reckon, but nothing else.

Went to Cooper A/T's then ATR's after the Toyos and they seemed a stronger better wearing tyre. But think I may try another brand in LT once my Grandflops wear out.

      Hope that helps.

        Re: Toyo Open country

Had a set of Open Country AT fitted this morning. They are passenger not LT in 265/65/17 - 112S.

They look a lot chunkier in real life than in the pics. So far I've only driven about 50odd km on them and am surpised that there is no noticeable difference to the Grandtreks as far as road noise. Considering the tread voids are about triple the size I'm really surprised.

I'd originally considered BFG ATs but when the price went up by about 70 bucks per tyre I lost interest. Also as I'm not planning on anything too extreme in the near future I didn't really see the need for an LT constructed tyre. The money I saved will goto a set of Maxtrax.
For the tyre geeks the sidewall info is as follows:
        Treadwear 500, Traction A, Temp B.
        Tread plies - 2 poly, 2 steel, 1 nylon
        Sidewall Plies - 2 poly

Tread depth is just over 10mm so pretty average I guess for this type of tyre.

I don't think there's too many people running them on here and online reviews are mixed (as are just about all tyres) so only time will tell if they are a good choice.

        Cheers.

          Re: Toyo Open country

There was a set on our Prado when we bought the car. They are certainly quiet and in sand they are fine. They are getting very low now and need replacing but at this stage they are getting slippery on wet roads. I am not sure how far the tyres have traveled but at a guess 70 thousand km's. That is assuming the original dunlops lasted 40th, the car has now done 110,000.

            Re: Toyo Open country

            Gidday guys,

I am new on here and thought I should ask the question regarding 265/70/17s as well.

I am over in Dubai and have recently purchased a 2006 VX Prado with worn stock Dunlop Grand treks and OEM suspension.

I have my eye on the TOYO Open Country MT tyres in 265/70/17 however I believe these MT tyres are quite a lot larger than a normal 265/70/17 tyre, so i was wondering if anyone has fitted these with OEM suspension and found any scary rubbing issues.. I mean more so than the occasion scuff of the plastic inner wheel arch??

Over here we can use SpiderTrax wheel spacers, however I am not keen on these as they lead to a weak point on the vehicle, not to mention if they break the damage is quite spectacular :-).

Any1 who who has any pointers on the Toyo MT would be much appreciated.

            Thanks in advance.

              Wazza,

I am also interested in the TOYO Open Country H/T. Do you know if the hard wheel cover will fit over these tyres, as they have very square shoulders.

                Re: Toyo Open country

I got a reply back from the Toyo rep in Sydney .. whoo hooo.. this is what he said:

"I believe the 265/70R17 Open Country MT tyre will fit on your Prado with the OEM suspension & wheels, but the clearance between the tyre sidewall and the control arm connecting rod would be minimal. Keep in mind you would need to fit up a tyre and fit it to the vehicle to ensure the clearance between tyre & control arm connecting rod is adequate."

Anyways to cut a long story short .. I just put the whole saga to bed and purchased Yoko's HT/S 275/65/17 .. yes a far cry from what I was aiming at but hey they drive fine on the road and do the job in the desert... anything got to be better than Dunlop Grand Craps!!!!

Next time round I will prob get Toyo ATs ...

Cheers & have a good one.

                  Re: Toyo Open country

I fitted two sets of Toyo Open Country HTs to my old Forerunner. Got 100,000 km for the first set and had about 90,000 km on the second set with still plenty of tread to go when I sold the car. Never had a problem, they were quiet and very durable, no dramas on gravel roads or the beach. Only had one puncture that I can recall and that was from a batton screw picked up somewhere in town.

Have perservered with the Grandtrecks since I picked up my Prado brand new but I'm about to head to Lake Eyre and am seriously considering fitting Toyo Open Country HT LTs before I go.

                    Re: Toyo Open country

Had some older model Open Country tyres fitted to a Hilux and they were disappointing - completely chopped up and shredded within 25,000km on gravel/rock roads. Admittedly, with a ute there tends to be more wheel slippage with little load in the rear. We switched to BFG's and they suit the car a whole lot better. I have not tried the newer Toyo AT tyre, so cannot comment. I guess with every tyre brand there are good and bad stories depending on the application and conditions in which the tyres will be used.

I agree. I think different tyres suit different driving styles. People with bad stories may have chosen the wrong Tyre for their driving style/application. I think you sometimes just have to pick one and learn from your own experience what tyre is good for you.

I have had the 265/70 LT Open Country AT's fitted to my Prado. I have been surprised by their lack of noise, just as quiet as the Grandtrek's. They hang on well at high speed on bitumen still too. Going with this size tyre has given me about a 15mm lift as well!!They seem at home on gravel roads, while I haven't had them in really serious mud(I haven't had to drop tyre pressures even) they seem to do alright. Very happy at this stage, only a couple of thousand Km's so far...

Hi there. How much did you pay for the LTs Toyos?

My non LTs have now done just over 50,000kms and still have more tread depth than new Grandtreks. Next week I'll be doing some rocky tracks around Alice Springs follwed by a trip down the Oodnadatta track so will be interested to see how / if they chop up too much in the rough.

I've found they're about as good as most AT tyres in mud. ie- not that good. The treads tend to clog up quite easily but on bitumen and dirt roads they are great.

                          Cheers.

I paid $400 a tyre fitted and balanced - but there will be some Pilbara tax in that.

This was about the same price as the same tyre from BFG - 265/70/17 LT

I think I paid about $365/tyre all up but that was fitted, balanced and a wheel alignment all done at the same time.
