  • Help from You All

Golly has been given a $1500 dollar allowance for some new tyres on the Prado...
Now my tyres are only 30K old and in very good nick, never been offroad by the looks of them
Because of the wine vineyard blowout I have just read hahaha, I want to get some meat under the girl... did I just say that !
Now I have standard suspension and dont look like upgrading for a few years yet, so this limits my choice does it ?

I like the look of the BFG 65's or can I go 70's without rubbing on full lock or whilst tramming up so terrain on the inside of the guards.
I like the Wranglers and Coopers too.

This is my quandry, do I go ATR, or a bit meatier. It will aid in my noobish driving skills offroad to have the extra grip of the MTZ style or STT's
The BFG's have some decent treat on them for an AT for sure but how noisy are there Muddies.

I need honest opinions on how noisy the chunkier stlye tyres are for family reasons, this may stear me towards the BFG's if its too loud. Mind you
the POD was a little noisy but still ok to the ears.

    Cheers Guys

    Re: Help from You All

You have to decide what you drive on the most? Blacktop, dirt, gravel?

I would suggest 694's as a good allrounder. apart from that your up into more aggressive tread patterns which will also bring a slight amount of road noise.

MTZ's are the real good ones, but you wont get 5 for $1500 I would think.

There is "STACKS" of info on various tyres and what to choose in some of the other threads here as well, it may pay you to scan thru them as well for further info.

      Golly,
The current price for MTZs in Perth is $400 - $420.
Offroad the MTZs are awesome. Whether you can live with them day to day is a personal thing.
If you decide you can stretch your allowance that far you are welcome to come round and fit my MTZs onto your rig (they are just sitting in my garage on a second set of rims) and take it for a for a drive to access the noise, road handling characteristics.

Leachy is talking about Mickey Thompson MTZs, although consider the 4 rib ATZ, also form MickeyT. Agressive and still great for the blacktop. Quicky raves about them.

          Matt paid $413ea. (265/70R17)

Im researching myself atm, looking at the Mickey MTZs cause Im offroad every 2nd w/e and the wife doesn't drive far to work.

            No problem Golly,

My work schedule for the next couple of months is 3 weeks in sydney and 1 week in Perth rotations. So give me a bit of notice and we can set it up.
I've got a compressor/rattle gun and a workshop trolley jack so it doesn't take long to swap over a set of wheels.

              Re: Help from You All

I think you need to do a lot of off roading/trips to justify running muddies all the time.
They cost you a lot per kilometre... not only extra fuel but wear also. You'll spend $2000 for 5 tyres that might last 50k kms or so.

AT's will be fine for a beginer and standard suspension... you'll run out off clearance before grip in 95% of off road situations.

For $1500 your budget will be stretched just getting 5 BFG's... But at least you'll get 80K out of them..

                Re: Help from You All

First, make an honest assessment of the type and amount of use the tyres are likely to be subjected to. This should generally guide you in the best direction. Like shoes for your keet, each shoe is made for a different purpose with pros and cons. For example, you might trade grip for road noise, etc.

From you posts and set-up, all terrain tyres sounds like the best match. I chose Bridgestone D694s as they have served us well in the past and got us to most places in good nick.

If you are likely to be doing something more hardcore or specific, then there are much better tyres available for those purposes. If you can afford two sets of rims, then keep your city tyres and buy a secondary set for 4wd'ing. But you'll need storage space and be prepared to change them over each time.

                    Re: Help from You All

haha storage is not a problem. Why I ask all this, is I am gearing up to head out with the WA lads, but want to have the grip for the places I have seen they go. Oh, and I am pretty blessed Minister wise, she spoils me too much, so upgraded suspension wont really be that long off.
Yesterday I read that Opposite Lock Balcatta had MTZ's at $300 a pop....... surely not, will have to call. 8)
If not I may take Matt's approach and get a set of BFG's for the alloys for now, and get a set of muddies on steelies later on down the track, after a few outings.

300 a pop, I would be taking your wallet ! I reckon the cheapest I could find here using contacts was $325 each!

I'd even get some spares and ship them over on a back load.

I'd say no chance in 17's... maybe in 15' sizes...
