Put them on the same axle.

Have you thought about picking up a set of Prado rims and using the same wheel/size everywhere?

Hi ABD, rather than carrying a selection of wheel nuts depending on where you put what rims, have you considered changing the wheel studs on your van to metric (M12 x 1.5) then you have one set of nuts for every rim and the nuts just follow the rims.

        Cheers Andrew

Re: running different different size profile in an emergency

          G'day Andrew,
Been around the local car part places today trying to source wheel nuts.
Metric wheel nuts to fit the steel wheels to the prado were easy but 1/2" nuts to fit alloys to the van is much harder.
May have to rethink the whole exercise.
          All suggestions greatfully received.

different wheel nuts alloy and steel?

[QUOTE=xvprado;212987]Yep, they look to be a good buy, saw them on ebay

You will encounter two problems, firstly the steel and alloy rims require different wheel nuts to attach them to the car, the alloys have special wheel nut that sits into the wheel face, whereas the steel have a standard taper head, if you used the wheel nuts made for allloys on the steel, they wouldnt sit tight and flush allowing potential for wheel wobble and if vice versa you would damage the alloy rim, so you would need to carry a spare set of wheel nuts

I have just bought 4 alloy wheels and tyres for my 120 GX which has 4 white King steel wheels on it. I thought the wheel nuts would be the same? Am i right in thinking i am now on the lookout for a set of wheel nuts for the alloys?

the nuts for the toyota alloys are different to the steel rim nuts

the steel rim nuts would fit the copy alloy wheels

Using the nuts designed for the steelies on your alloys will wreck them and there's also a chance that they will work loose. There's a good reason why they are different. I have 2 sets of rims for my car, GXL alloys and GXL steelies with 26 lug nuts and 26 steel wheel nuts.

I ran a 35' on the front drivers side and a stock 265/70/17 when I wrecked one of my 35's- I only bought 4.... wont make a scrap of difference , id say with the rear being a limited slip yes theres a risk of it getting hot with a difference in tyre size but on the front it wouldn't matter at all its an open diff.

Related question..... what about tyres of the same size but different brands. I have for years run BFGs in 265/65- good tyres. I currently have 2 on the front with about 12000 km on them while the back are shagged at 55000 [ a lot of dirt has cut them up] and due for replacement. I am tossing up between 2 new BFGs or going to something like Cooper AT3, Dueller 697 or the new Mickey Thompson. Any issues with mixing brands [not sizes] . They will be paired on each end. I have had no problems with a 40000 km disparity front to rear so far. Thoughts?

I can't see it causing any issues.

Those are for the alloys but can be used for the steel wheels as a back up. But you should never use the nuts from the steel wheels to support the alloy wheels.

Son has just put MT alloys on his 4wd ute and these used tapered wheel nuts. Dumb in my view but no choice.
