  • Why are you guy's so limited in tyre size

    Hello,
I read many posts about tyre sizes in Aus,
I take it that in some states, you can not fit a taller tyre, as your insurance company will void your policy?
    From my expierience, the change from 265 x 65 x R17 to 265 x 70 x R17 has been fantastic.
I can feel all the changes in the surface.
The Dunflops AT20 were pathetic, just so much body roll, it was frightening.
Now with the stiffer BFG A/T in a taller size, I would never look back.
I feel to the extent that Toyo should send all the Land Cruiser Prado's out of Japan with the BFG A/T 265 x 70 x R17 as standard fittment.

Unfortunately our road laws and regulations vary from state to state (thought there is some talk of all states working on unilateral laws)

Most states allow a small tyre size increase (15 to 50mm depending where you are) To go any larger you need to get an engineers certificate to make it legal and thus roadworthy.

Most (all?) insurance companies will void your insurance cover if you have a mod that is illegal or un-roadworthy. Also some insurance companies won't cover some modifications full stop.

The bottom line is anything is possible, if it's legal/engineered. There's a few insurance companies around that will insure even the most radical vehicles as long as you have the engineering squared away.

      Well, I am slightly confused.
So you think they will be slippy in the wet?
I am very happy with them, these are the A/T not the M/T.

          Do tell?
          .
          .
I have probably had them on for 12 months now, and this is how I see them.
On a good dry road, the braking is as good as the Dunflops in a strait line.
Still much less dive and dip.
On a wet road, I haven't had to use them in anger yet on the brakes.
In the snow and slush they are better than the Dunflops by a mile !
I have had a few twichy moments, but I put that down to other factors.
          In the ice and snow,
I find that center diff locked is only good when driving mile after mile in reasonably strait driving.
If your driving around town, or the housing suburbs, with ice and snow, then locking the center diff is bad.
It is like 'night and day' bad.
The front wheels will always 'run wide' no matter what speed you are driving.
Much better to unlock the center diff.
This happens at 10 mph, and also 50 mph, and then you twitch !
Oh yes, you don't want to feel the front wheels being 'pushed out' at say 50 or 60 mph, the armco barrier getting closer all the time.
It is surprising just how much the center diff locked, pushes out the front wheels.
When I am on a strait road, traveling say 40mph, with say standing deep water (2 inch or about), or icy, conditions, then it is good to lock the center diff.
Hit the water, and the 'cruiser just keeps a 100% strait line, diff unlocked, and the 'cruiser will wobble and pull on the steering wheel, drift a little.
Otherwise then leave the diff unlocked.

The BFG A/T just feel so much better on a dry road, they really do.
I didn't drive the Dunflops in the ice and snow, but I feel they would simply clog up the treads, and offer 'slicks' to the road surface.
The bonus with the 265 x 70 x R17, is that the speedo is 100% accurate now, accordind to numerous GPS devices I have used. I think the tread warranty is 50,000 miles.

Longetivity, well, we all know the BFG A/T are probably the 'longest running tyre available'.
I think I must have perhaps 15000 miles on mine, and honestly, they look brand new still.
So if I only get say 35,000 from the Dunflops, then the additional cost of the BFG has more than paid for itself.

Just at the top of out road, there is a set of traffic lights, and these couldn't be more inconvienient.
As they are alway 'flow controled' where the main road is priority.
This means, every single time you approach these lights, they are red.
And they hold you there for say 15 to 20 seconds, before you get the green.
Well, comming home last night, thick snow and ice, there was a large van, stuck at the lights.
Obviously, had to wait, as his light was red, then come green, he was stuck.
          This is a decent incline, probably a 1 in 10 or 10%
I reversed the 'cruiser up to the front of him, an threw him the 10 ton nylon strop.
He couldn't get it through the tow eye, and I couldn't find the shackel, so he passed it right around the whole front cross member.
the other end, simply over the tow ball on the back of the 'cruiser.
Right, shift into low box, which also locks center diff, turn's the knob for rear diff lock, so I have yellow light and red light.
Slowly takes up the slack, and the cruiser, with no drama 'whatsoever' simply pulled this 3.5 ton van up the hill and around the corner to a lesser graidient road.
All in thick snow with ice.
There was almost no wheel slip.
You can't underestimate the gripping power of decent tyres, when in low box, and diffs locked.
          they are really so strong.
Now I ask myself, how embarassing would it have been with the Dunflops on, and as I took up the slack, all of my 4 wheels just turned and slipped, which I am 100% sure what would have happened.

          Thank you BFG.

uk_vette, I just watched that video and it looks darn cold there. From the sound of your wifes accent I am guessing you are in Wales? I have family in Bridgend and further up north on the welsh coast.
