  • Kumho 285 x 70 x R17

    Hello,

    Any one put a 285 x 70 x R17 on a standard lift 120 series.
With no heavy undue weight carried.

Kumho say they can go on a 7.5 to a 9 inch rim
And the section width would be 11.5 inch on an 8.5 inch rim
    Diameter would be 32.7 inch

    (I have the 265 x 70 x r17 on at the moment. at 31.9 inch)

they might need a 'body work ' trim under the arches.
My question is , would they foul the front strut?

And they will rub on the sway bar and possibly inner guards.

        Re: Kumho 285 x 70 x R17

        Hi Vette,
I asked this question on PP a while back about 285/70/R17 tyres to standard rims, at the time I spoke to Ando who had done this also, I then experiemented a bit and the end result is:

I fitted a Cooper STT 285/70/17 on a steel rim (aftermarket ROH) to a 2004 GXL that had a lift kit (45 to 50mm),
the only things that required attention was, you need to fit a 6mm wheel spacer behind the wheel to clear the upper control arm and the inside edge of the mudflap needs a trim.

I have now upgraded to a 08 Grande and I have also fitted the 285's to this car, firstly I did it with the standard lift (using aftermaket Prado rims) and the same things need to be done (the 6mm spacer and trim the mud flap.) I now have 50mm lift and am quiet happy with the end result.

I understand there are issue with using wheel spacers and different sized tyres, So I suppose it is horses for courses,

Iam happy with 285 option that I use as a second set of off road tyres and it has worked well for me.

        Cheers

does anyone know of the legalities of the 6mm spacers, are they legal or not, do you need engineers cert? I allready have a bilstein lift which i changed too from a OME to give me more lift and 285's are something on the boil when my 265 70 17 MTR's get a bit lower.

Illegal in all states and can't be engineered.

There is a possibility you can get hub type spacers engineered in some states.. I've heard conflicting stories, but my guess would be you can't.

Also increasing the track with different off set wheels can be an issue in some states. For example here in SA and in NSW you can not icrease the track by more than 50mm (so 25mm more each side)

              Re: Kumho 285 x 70 x R17

Another problem is that with the wider rubber you can sometimes encounter rubbing whereby the outside edge of the tyre scrapes against the inner fender behind the wheel and, in some cases, even tear away your mud - spats/mud flaps. I had this problem on my 90 series whilst running the Trak 2 sunraysia type wheels that had the landcruiser offset. I ended up removing the factory mud spats and put on heavy duty mud flaps (like I have done with my 120). I also had to take a hammer to the seam between the inner guard where it joins the sill panel and smack it in a little to stop the rubbing when approaching full lock.

The stock rims and 70 series BFGs on my 120 don't have any of those problems with the 2 inch lift.

275 or 285 - hardly worth the effort in my opinion. Unless of course, your uncle has a "truckload" of 285s in his shed which he wants to get rid of!

"275 or 285 - hardly worth the effort in my opinion."

Yeah im not realy interested in increasing my width of tyre im after more height from the tyre and a 285x70x17 comes in at a smidge over a traditional 33inch tyre, whereas my 265x70x17's i reckon wouldnt be much higher than a 31inch.

ideally i wanna run something like a 32inch mtr as i had these on my previous lux with a lift, only needed to move the mudflaps and mount them on the side rails. BUT being a 17inch rim its limited choices.

definatley not keen on the spacers if not legal and probably put more stress on shafts, CV's etc too i would think.

                  So Do You Recommend using a " 285 x 70 x R17 " instead of " 265 x 65 x R17 "

Because it is the only size for R17 BFGoodRich All train tiers we have from our dealer ...

They rub at full lock...either lifted or not.... and thats with aftermarket rims. On factory rims they foul on the strut.

Find a dealer with better customer service.... why can they get 285 and not 265?? sounds like BS to me...
