Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

To be honest I'm guessing that's what is happening. It is definitely not a balance issue. Can't think what else it would be.

      Hey guys

This is unheard of from tyre technology today. This used to be a common phenomina with bias ply tyres years ago but not with steel belted radials. My ATZ's have done around 10k now and not had any hint of flat spotting

My pressures are set at 36psi all round and hopefully going to get around to fitting the tyre pressure monitoring system tomorrow, all things going well

I had a set of these fitted on Monday. Wrapped in them. Look good, sounds good and feel good but haven't got them dirty yet. I haven't noticed a flatness to them when the car has been sitting around all day. How many ks have they done? I would be going back to the fitter/supplier and asking a few questions. Quite a few on the forum now with these beastly ATs and no one else has made a comment like that.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

We live a short distance from the freeway, and I can report that all of our cars have done this regardless of brand and quality of tyre. It's a bit worse in winter, and less noticeable on softly sprung cars. It's a non-issue, the ride smoothes out after a few hundred metres, and yes, it's better now than it used to be with crossplies. Most people wouldn't notice because the tyres are warmed up some by the time they get to the freeway.

The 'worst' car we have for this is shod with Yoko Advan performance tyres - takes about a km to settle down at 100kph. I think the Prado is better than that, but I haven't measured it to be sure.

Things seem to have settled down. Had the tyres on for three weeks now and in the last week have hardly noticed anything.

Hey does anyone have a picture of these on the vehicle? I have seen one before but cant find it again?

Got to toss up between these and BFG all-terrains as BFG have a deal where you buy 4 tyres and get a Bushranger Blackmax compressor for free... which i have but could sell on or give away.

Just for your info guys BFG are only giving away a limited number of compressors and it is "only while stocks last". I managed to get mine on the first day of release (1st May) and the dealer was only given 7 compressors, no more to be got so if you want one you had better hurry up or use the phone to find out who has got one for offer.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

Schaffer, the ATZ look like a good way to go without full blown MTZ's. I am interested in a good compromise and these look to be the ticket.

I would love to have some MTZ's but I still think of the Goodyears I had with an agressive tread. It was often stated "they are much quieter than mudders" but they were very noisy at highway speed. The prices appear almost the same so i n that respect MTZ's llok to be the go but then I think of most driving as back and forth to work in Sydney chaos....MTZ's are more handy to drive over the Vespa in these conditions.

The ATZ's appear to have reasonable side biters but I need to look at some in person.

                      Hey Lost Dingo

I will be in Sydney next week down in Matraville (staying in Maroubra) so if you are reasonably close, we could meet up and you can have a look at mine. PM me if you think it worthwhile

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

                        Hi guys.

Could any of you that are running the 4 Rib ATZ tell me if you have seen any increase in fuel consumption? (Assuming that you did not go up in size eg, from 265/65/17 to 265/70/17)

My MTZs used 1 to 1.25 litres per 100 more than my ATRs and I’m interested in how the 4 Rids compare.

                        Thanks,

                        Paul.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

I can't say, ours were installed at delivery.

There are 3 facets to this issue:

                          1) Increasing the diameter changes the gearing. This results in the engine having to work slightly harder at any particular roadspeed/gear/acceleration.

                          2) Increasing the diameter alters the speedo and odometer accuracy. This means that the vehicle is travelling further per indication on the speedo. (actually more accurate than standard), which has the effect of making the economy figures more accurate - the standard machine is optimistic. Even if nothing else changed this is worth a few %.

                          3) The LT spec tyres are heavier.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

I've had my ATZ/4s for about 5000klms. Using a GPS my speedo is about 3% under - and indicated 100kph on the speedo registers on the GPS as 103kph.

I've found it hard to compare current fuel consumption with that of my previous tyres (Cooper ATRs 265 65R 17). With the ATZ/4s the vehicle definately uses more fuel, however I'm unclear whether that is offset by the fact that (in my case) the vehicle is travelling about 3% further than indicated by the odometer.

                                Thanks guys,

My main reason for asking Re mileage is to gauge the 4 Ribs rolling resistance.

I ran 2 sets of wheels and tyres both in 265/70/17 and my MTZs always returned worse fuel figures than my 10 ply ATRs.

I would expect the ATZs to be better than the MTZs for rolling resistance but I thought I would see what people are getting.

As an aside, my speedo was 6% under with the 265/70/17s.

                                Paul.
