Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

My fuel consumption increased by around 1 litre / 100km once I fitted the ATZ in 265/70R17 and the speedo is out by about 2% ~ 100km/h on speedo is reading 98km/h on GPS so still in my favour. I can put up with the increase in fuel while having the confidence of better traction on wet bitumen and a better chance in the sloppy stuff, although they have let me down once already when it got too sloppy

Finally booked my car in for these ATZ after reading every single review on the entire internet.

I have tossed up between, BFG all terrains KO, MT ATZ4, MT MTZ, and i will let you all know how they go once i get them on my car on Friday!
        I can't wait. Getting them for $355/Tyre + $49 Wheel Alignment.

I am only getting 4 at this stage. I will get the 5th and lose my hardcover once my credit card recovers.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

Got the ATZs fitted the other day after tossing up whether to go between BFG A/T (and a free compressor), OR Mickey Thompson MTZ.

Most of my driving is done to and from work... at least 100km each day but always try and get offroad as much as i can.

Here are some pictures of the final product and i must say i reckon they look awesome and grip is superb from what i have felt so far.
They seem to hum above 60kph. Definitely noticeable to my ears compared to the AT20 Grandtreks but for a fairly aggressive A/T i think they are reasonable. They do feel heavier too but they are LT construction.

Have been advised by tire dealer that 38PSI is the go, but can go as high as 55PSI for high load application.

Thought i would post some pics here as i know i was struggling to find pics of the ATZ on vehicles ...

Im happy. Going to 'test' them tomorrow at the powerlines... should be fun and nice to have a little more clearance too.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

Had my ATZ's in 70 profile fitted yesterday arvo. pretty agressive tread for an AT, internet photos dont do them justice 8) . Like speed_racer I was considering the MTZ's but in the end I thought they would be overkill since the prado is a tourer. Compared to the BFG AT's and MT's Ive had before on other 4wds and the ATZ's emit a very audible whine/hum from about 45-80km/h. but then again, the prado has the quiestest drivetrain out of all of them so its understandable. Can notice the extra weight and greater rolling resistance so the engine is having to work a little harder. just have to test them offroad now!

does anyone take notice of how much balancing weight they have on each tyre? I had a minimum on one side of 10g and a max of 120g on my rims.

I can have a squizz tonight but it was pointed out to me that there was a LOT of weight applied to get these all balanced.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

When my tyres were fitted there were three of them that had between 150 and 200 grams of weight total (both sides). This is not acceptable and I made the dealer aware of the fact to which he agreed. End result was I was going to Adelaide the next day and he didn't have any more in stock so I did around 5k on the tyres then had them cheerfully replaced with tyres that took less weight. Sometimes it is just a matter of deflating the tyre and rotating it on the rim and then trying again but in my case it did not work. Am very happy with the replacements though.

I am currently trialling a set of TPMS on the Prado and trailer so will send a report shortly.

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

My MTZ's had huge amounts of weights added to try and balance them. So much so that when I went to Adelaiade I had them rebalanced cause most of the weights had come off on the trip down. Still they had to use a lot of weight to get them near balanced and the reason why I am experiencing the loud noise from these tyres. Though they are good off road.

Jacto, wheres the line between acceptable/not acceptable. I was told by my tyre fitter that 150g each side of rim (total of 300g per rim) was the line but that seems to be almost double what your original tyres were...

Re: Mickey Thompson ATZ 4 rib

Sorry I took so long to reply but have just returned from 8 week trip up North. I purchased tyres from Kooweerup tyre & brake in Sth Gippsland. Have just completed over 12k up to Arkaroola (very rough rocky roads) across to Alice to Katherine, Kununurra back through GregorY NP, Barkly homestead(Brunette Downs), back to Alice, West Macs to Uluru & olgas across the french Line on the Simpson then back home. Not one bit of trouble with the tyres. They were great. they did what i was hoping for. the two rear tyers are a bit more chopped up than the front because i was very heavy when fully loaded. My big mistake was not getting Min 2" lift before we left. Now that i have experienced a trip like this i will look at getting air bags to pump up when loaded up.
The mighty D4D was great, got me over Big Red first go. this car can get learners like myself out of most situations.
Hope you all have great trips where ever you go

I don't know if there is a fine line but I will not accept any more than 150gm total on a tyre for balancing and this was acknowledged by my dealer on the Mickey T's and he rang the distributor who confirmed it and therefore sent replacement tyres up for my vehicle. I might add that I also did a trip to Adelaide on the tyres before they replaced them and they said that as long as the tyres had not done any more than 10,000km - no problem.

when I was running tyre services and tyres needed more than 150gm for balancing, the tyres were removed and replaced but you do get the dealers that will call your bluff, as in your case saying that 150gm each side is acceptable, I reiterate, it is not acceptable.
