• Mickey Thompson 5 Rib ATZ

I've been searching the forum for info/review on the Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 rib (found plenty on the ATZ 4 rib) and just wondering if anyone has tried these and could provide me with some feedback? The reason I ask is I have an 04 GX with stock steelies and am upgrading to 17x7.5 alloys and opting for some 245/70R17 rubber to remain inside the flares, but makes my selection very limited. I am after an all terrain and tossing up between the Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 rib, Pirelli scorpian ATR and Cooper ST. I've found plenty of info on Pirelli and Cooper tyres but next to nothing on Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 rib. Anyone got advice/feedback on the Mickey Thompson 5 rib?

Cheers,
Corbo

Re: Mickey Thompson 5 Rib ATZ

I have a friend who had 285/70/R17 5 ribs on his 100 series. He loved them but chewed lugs off them in the first week on some pretty rocky stuff (I think the same would've happened with any tyre). He has just bought the 4 ribs as he wanted a bit more traction in mud. Given that he stuck with Mickeys he seems pretty happy with them. They should be good if you're not after anything too aggressive. The 4 rib are very quiet though and I decided to go that way as I knew I'd want the chunkier stuff up the Vic high country.

FlyingBushPig,
I've heard good things about the 4 rib but am only going with the 5 rib to stay on the legal side. How do you go with the 265 width in the 4 rib? do they throw stones/mud up the side of the car? Have you got any photos showing how much they stick out?
Cheers,

Hi
Iv'e got the 5 rib ATZ's and they are great, been up the beach loads of times without issue, also to Landcruiser Park and Mt Mee. They've been on for a while now and don't seem to have worn much at all

Hi yep, they look quite chunky and a few people have queried them (not the cops) but it's quite borderline. From sitting in the drivers seat and looking in the mirror all you can see is the side tread (which I believe is ok). The mirror sticks out further than the wheel arch so technically that viewpoint is valid in saying they don't stick out. I think if I was pulled up I'd try to have a friendly discussion as I really don't know how strict they get when it's so borderline. I'm not against putting some small decent looking flares on anyway and may do eventually to save the paintwork from chips which may result from stones flying out of the sidewall tread. Have a look at this thread for some pics (need to take more though): http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....=2110&start=20

Re: Mickey Thompson 5 Rib ATZ

Finally after nearly 10 weeks of waiting I got my new Speedy alloys and Mickey Thompson ATZ 5 ribs 245/70 on the Prado. Seeing though there is no write up on these (from what I could find) I thought I would do a review on them. So far they're only a couple days old and about 200km under there belt but very happy so far. Done a heap of beach driving over the weekend and they seemed to just float over the sand with ease. They are also very quiet on the road, I would even say quieter then the Grandtreks and Bridgestone AT. Initial impressions are good but we'll see how they perform over the next 5-10,000km.

Re: Mickey Thompson 5 Rib ATZ

Hey Corbo;

The last 2 sets of my tyres have been the 265/70/R17 MT ATZ 5rib and have had no worries whatsoever with them.
With the last set (on the prado now) I had a problem of them picking up a lot of stones in the tread, I do at least 20km
per day on rough gravel and was thinking of going to the 4rib ATZs on the rear for the wider tread pattern,( same carcass, same rubber compound, same tyre weight), wouldnt affect driving much
Problem was solved by dropping the back tyres down another few Psi (front 36-38 rear 34-36) dont know why this was
but it worked.27072009028.jpg[/attachment:mfpnv57c]27072009029.jpg[/attachment:mfpnv57c].
Keep an eye on pressures and such and you'll get awesome wear out of these tyres

Thinking of getting the ATZ5rib,what sort of milage are they doing, any balance problems with them, running ATRcoopers 265/70/17. done 88000kys, one tyre started to seperate, probably about another 30000kys in remaining tyres, if they don't go the same way, always had balancing problems with them, thanking you Friar.

Re: Mickey Thompson 5 Rib ATZ

Hey Friar,

Only done about 6,000km so far and am nothing but impressed. They don't even look the slightest bit worn and no tyre damage to note. I have noticed they do get bits of gravel stuck in them pretty easy (like Prado887 indicated) but doesn't cause damage and you can just flick them out when you've stopped. No balance issues but too early to really tell. As for Km, I would be happy to get 70,000km-80,000km out of them, any more and the tread is likely to be very shallow. I'd rather replace before the tyre indicators as I think by this time performance is significantly reduced.

Cheers

PS. I run 36psi all round on the road and drop this to suit offroad conditions

Hey Corbo and Friar

As in my last post, my spare in the photo with 82k on it is still legal no questions, I only replaced to a new set as they were
starting to get a little slippery on roads after rain, ( also in clay and offroad) but on the sand and normal
road conditions they were still perfect to drive on. with the chips and cuts in the tyre tread they were only marginally
noisier than usual, as for the balance issues if you keep them aligned and balanced and in good rotation they are not a problem, (that is to say so far i have not encountered any and I badly need a wheel alignment!!!) they were and are still excellent tyres and am looking into a new set for after Christmas as well

starting to get to know mine, I run my fronts generally 1 pound higher
generally they are 41psi f / 40psi b on the tar for even scuffing, I could even drop 1 extra in the backs.

noticed after removing the rear seats.. but haven't started playing with the tyre pressures off road yet. butane

i was wondring why most of you running 40 psi , while there is sticker on my door panel that tyres should be 33 psi ,
is there any particular reason for that?
sorry for asking such a naieve question , but i'v been wanted to ask since i read the tyre presure thread.

You get better wear and fuel economy when you run at 40psi.

 I run my pressures off the indicaters on the corner of the tyre , the scuffs roll over the corner too much i up the pressure , scuff on away from the edge i decrease, mine really love that 40 mark , today my fronts where down to 38, i hadnt got far from the servo, before i could felt the difference 3 pounds made through the steering wheel... butane
P.S I dropped in a trailer tyre to the tyre shop, and the tyre fitter commented that they where wearing nice, so it must work???? then again he was a tyre fitter lol..
