GXL rim clearance on GX

I know it is possible to fit GXL alloys/rims on GX prado as I've seen many PP have done it already. However, I am looking to do so in the near future and was working on the car when I noticed that there is a structure (not sure what it is, see below) on the inside of the front wheels with about 12-13mm clearance to the tyre. By my understanding (which I gather must be wrong) is that if you go from a 6 to 7.5 inch rim you will lose 19mm clearance on the inside and gain 19mm on the outside given offset remains the same (+30) ( http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp ). So a 7.5 rim with 265 tyre won't fit, yet many of you have done this upgrade. Could someone please explain how this works, are GX rims different offset to GXL?

Where did you get the information that a GX steel rim has the same offset?

They are either different...or...

there are two different methods of measuring offset.. See here:

With the GXL alloy on and 265/65 tyres you will have much the same gap as with the steel rims.

G'day mate. That bump isn't just there on the GX. I've got a GXL with the (standard) 7.5 inch rims and the 265 section tyres have no problem fitting with that bump there. There must be a different offset with the skinny rims because the clearance my tyres have to that bump is about the same as in your photo. The only way I could see problems arising with that bump is if you went to a wider tyre (say a 275 or 285) which had aggressive sidebiters (like an MTZ for instance). Or if you tried to fit snowchains on the front (which, seeing you're in WA, probably wouldn't be an issue either).

Otherwise if you went to the 7.5inch rims and didn't go wider than 265 you would have no probs.

I have 17x8" wheels and 265 mickey T ATZ's on my '06GX with no probs. Never heard even the slightest scrape.

All good. The 6 inch rims must be different offset. I just assumed (wrong thing to do) +30 offset as that was what I had read on a couple of forums but obviously they were referring to GXL 7.5 inch alloys/rims only.

The size and offset should be stamped on the inside of the rims.
