  • Cooper Discoverer CTS

I went tyre shopping today. Found out that Cooper no longer makes my beloved AT's which I have got 76,000km out of todate maybe a couple of thousand left but safer to change now before I regret it later.

The options available are endless however I'm tossing between the ATR and the new CTS which I knew nothing about until today. They are a nice looking tyre similiar to the AT in appearance where the ATR looks more truck like now than the AT. Now all you 4WD ethusiasts are saying whats he worried about looks when its about performance. In the write up the CTS looks to win hands down on the black top and obviously the ATR on the dirt, I dont travel much on dirt anymore mainly the blacktop or beach, I also tow a boat.

After having At's for years now, I'm actually considering the CTS as they seem to be safer on the black top in the wet in the write up and look better. They will also match the specifications of the spare which is 265/70R17 AT.

Has anyone purchased these tyres or has a mate who has them, if so what are your thoughts or theirs on them, since I know very little about them?

    Look forward to your comments.

    Hi Pcullenward..

I went shopping today for the Cooper discoverer ST.
We have had these tyres for over 70,000 now and would definately get a fair few thousand out of them.

The STC is what I think you are talking about. Its the same design as the ST (sure trak) but with an australian compound that helps with chipping (C).
It came out pretty well the same time as when we bought a full compliment of ST's for our car and camper trailer.

Now we are only 3 weeks away from the PradoPoint Get together we are going to rubber up for the big trip. Better to be safe than sorry as you suggested.

Now as the financial crunch is everywhere I would love to replace all the tyres on the car and leave the camper alone but we will be swapping the tyres off the camper with the ones on the car, (3) and purchasing 2 new tyres to make the car tyres chokas of tread, and using the 3 best tyres off the car for the camper.

And at the price of the ST's now it will save a heap. $380 each. .. Last time they were only $330 i'm sure..

The camper has one unused tyre as its spare and the 2 used tyres are only worn 3mm in tread depth. may as well be perfect.

I have heard many people complain about the Coopers tyres......

              I have had them on my last 3 4X4's (an 80, a 100 and now the 120)

and my Prado has done a full 'lap around the block' on the current ATR's, without a single puncture.

Maybe I have been lucky, but I will be buying them again.

I lost the first ATR at less than 1500km. A slice of tread measuring about 30cm x 15cm went AWOL whilst I was towing my Jayco Outback along the Great Central Road past Warakurna on my way to Cape York. I replaced the tyre at the Tyrepower dealer in Alice and he told me there had been a few cases of carcass separation. After the trip I was driving along the relatively smooth freeways of Perth and noticed a distinct wobble from the wheels. I put the car in for a suspension checkup and wheel balance and alignment but this didn't improve things. Then I had 2 tyres let go in simlar fashion.I suspected that the carcassess were separating from the tread and this was pretty evident by looking at the tread peeling away from the tyre. I put BFGs on all round and relegated the ATRs to camper trailer duty only to have another 2 let go again via tread separation. When I originally purchased the ATRs I bought 3 ATRs and then after about 1,000km bought 2 more. Because I didn't buy a complete set in one hit there was no warranty. And, as soon as I admitted daring to venture off - road it was further pointed out to me that there is no warranty, dud tyres or not.

So for me, Cooper can stick their ATRs up where the sun doesn't shine. 3 years, two Prados, 2 sets of BFGs and only one puncture from a stick through the sidewall whilst "bushbashing" I'll stick with these thankyou very much.
