  • Twin Spares

Recently bought an 08 diesel Prado and I am ready to do some extensive travel would like to carry a 2nd spare, at this stage I am hoping to do without a roof rack and thought to swing arms on the rear. Interested to know whether they can be fitted if so by who or is there a cheaper option.

hey lyonsy yep you can get the swing a way rear wheel carrier for the 120s but you better be sitting down when they tell you the price, they r around $2500 plus fitted i believe, but i could be wrong, much cheaper to get a roofrack and gives you more cargo area, just a though. cheers samo

      Ian,

Yes you can get twin wheel carrier rear bars fitted several manufacturers make them probably the ones I have seen the most are the Kaymar brand. The prados that are sold to the mines around here come as a standard 3rd party option fitted.

Also it is a good idea to put your location in your profile so fellow members know where you are located.

        Mav,
I got so excited you got me on the sight I quickly worked out how to post but havent worked out how to update my profile. I actually viewed my profile which shows my location which is Darwin but not sure what I'm doing here yet.
Since I've been registered when we have come out from a topic back to the board we are having a little bit of difficulty on this sight so far, but only been a member for 10minutes sure I will get better.

            Re: Twin Spares

            Lyonsy,

I know you didn't want to get a roof rack, but we choose this as a preferred option as it provides greater flexibility for us (ie not just an extra tyre carrier).

Check-out our pics on this link: ARB roof rack

We have an ARB deluxe roof rack fitted with two tyre holder points welded into the frame. So we have three options availble. Use solely as a roof rack with luggage, use as a roof rack with 1/2 luggage and 1x extra spare tyre. Or place 2x extra spare tyres up top.

ps. Welcome to the forum (good to see another Darwinite) and make sure you order a Pradopoint.com sticker!

                Re: Twin Spares

Here's my 2 cents worth, more to confirm & further expand on what Samo & Mav have said.

If you look in the accesroeis section there are a couple of threads on this subject with a few pics of the K&N unit.

two supplier/manufacturers one is Kaymar (I have this unit fitted) and a second brand is K&N - company based in Canningvale WA (industrial suburb of Perth).

I have recently seen a 3rd manufacturer for both the 120 & 90 series Prado based somewhere in the eastern states, they had a advert in the latest 4X4 australia Magazine - will try and find some further details for you.

The down side to a twin wheel carrier is the extra weight add on about 100kg and the standard suspension sags about 1 inch from standard ride height.

So a suspension up grade for the rear is mandatory as part of the package deal - you could get away with std but you'll have the lowest prado around, I already tickle my fuel tank on some bumps/ruts.

If you would like some pics PM me and 'll send them direct to you - I'm still to sort out this picture embeding thing :?

                Best of luck

                Cheers

                  Re: Twin Spares

With the roofrack path, be careful of weight. The Prado spec is for 100kg.

A steel rack can weigh quite a lot, 30kg or more. An LT spec tyre and wheel weighs about the same, so a steel rack and a spare will eat up most of the maximum permitted load. Two spares up there and you'd be on or over the limit.

There are a couple of Alloy racks available which save a lot of weight. If you want to put 2 spares up there, that's the direction I'd be heading.

Re: Twin Spares update 3rd manufacturer

Eventually found that advert - dunno why I said 4X4 it was in 4wd action - issue with the mud tyre comparo test.

                      all terrain wheel carriers

                      www.allterrain4x4.com.au

states from $2400 on the advert

                      Happy hunting

Ps: haven't seen any manufacturer use the bonnet like the old series landies had back in the 70-early 80's either as far as tyre mounts are concerned.
