  • Coopers ATR & poor mileage

    Hi all.

I'm a new member to Pradopoint.com, although I did visit the site on several occasions when researching Prados prior to purchasing our second truck. I have a question re tyres.

This is my second Prado - both were Diesel GXL's and I upgraded the standard rubber to Coopers ATR's on both. The first Prado got somewhere close to 75K out of the ATRs. However with the current D4D Prado, I'll be flat out getting 55K out of the ATRs. I've done 45K to date, and the tyres are looking very second hand. I rotate and balance them every 10K and keep a close eye on the pressures, especially when towing the boat or van (both weigh in at around the 2 tonne). I have only every had the D4D car offroad once and we do a lot of highway miles. I'm just not happy with the mileage at all with this current set of tyres (ATRs) and I'm at a loss as to why.

Can someone advise me - although I've seen plenty of Prados with BFG's....are they actually legal to fit on the Prado? I've read that they are not legal due to the different profile sizing (or something? Not sure). If they are legal, I'll be going back to BFG's when the ATR's are shot all together. I had a set of BFG's on our Jackaroo, did a heap of offroading and they lasted a good 80K.

Thanks to all. I look forward to some advice re this. Thanks also for an awesom site.

Re: Coopers ATR & poor mileage

I had a set of cooper ATR light truck that I got 100 000 KM from in 5 years, the main reason I replaced them was the they were getting fatigue cracks in them and at the time I was going to be pulling a 2t caravan 1600 kms.
I have changed to cooper St's now but I never had any problems with the ATR but as I said I had the light truck version.

Re: Coopers ATR & poor mileage

        Hi guys,

Many thanks for your responses. I purchased the ATRs from reputable a Coopers dealer in Rocky. I'll take a visit back to the store this week and let you all know how I get on. I have noticed also that the tyres have hairline cracks running around the tyres approx 1 inch from the rims - that's all 4 of them (the spare has done about 5kms since new). I've read elsewhere on this forum that the Coopers have issues with some batches of tyres that are shipped in and sold in Aust and also the 65 series profile tyres. The tyres on the Prado are 265/65/R17 M+S(what ever this means?).....so, it sounds like I've possibly been sold the inferior ATRs. Anyways, let's see where this leads - probably no where.

Yep Gav, The 65 series profile are a passenger construction not light truck, I have the light truck version 70 series profile and they have a considerably more strong look about them, I am at about 70 odd thousand now and they look as though they will go out close to 100 k. One of the tyres copped a fair peppering on my trip to Finke ( rear right ) but it hasnt actually worn the tyre down just peppered the surface, also no flats either . Its a shame that Cooper actually sell 4wd tyres in passenger constrution as it lets the entire brand down, if they only sold Light truck construction I think they would be on a winner.

Not trying to pick but how do you rotate the tyres if the spare has 5km on it - not sure about the D4D but my old oil burner's manual says to rotate the fifth into the equation as well - just thinking if Cooper's want to the proverbial bumholes they could try and use that as an out ....

Re: Coopers ATR & poor mileage

              Hi Stevo and all,

Thanks heaps for your comments. Just to confirm - I don't include the spare in the rotations- never have. I only do the 4 tyres on the car - front to back. You are probably correct - Coopers will probably find this to be an issue. I'm usually one not to worry about following through with these sorts of things (I'd usually just cop it sweat and pay out of my bum for a replacement set)..... but as I'm on my third set of Coopers ATRs, and my father is running a set on his Prado (based upon my previous experiences with the Coopers), and my brother who also has a set on his Prado, and a mate who just recently purchased a D4D GXL and popped a set on his car........I'm going to follow through with this. Now that BFG have a 65 series profile tyre (and I haven't checked, but I'm expecting that the BFG equivalent is a light truck construction??), then guess what I'm replacing the ATR's with - and so will dad, the bro and mate eventually!!!! Let's see what happens.

I toook another look at the car this afternoon to see if the tyres are really as bad as I think. Maybe I am being unreasonable- but seriously, the tyres look bloody terrible - all 4 of them - and are almost down to the little depth indicators in the centre of the tyres (sorry all, I'm not up with tyre speak). So with only 45k on them, I'm a little miffed and very dissappointed. The car has done 45000kms, of which at least 20000kms is highway work. I rotate and align the tyres every 10000kms, watch the pressures religiously, especially when towing the van any distances (using the Coopers "4 psi rule").......so I just don't get it. This is the first set of Coopers ATRs that have let me down. Time for a change if Coopers can't explain. Then there is the minister for war and finances(wife) - wait until she takes this up with the dealer. You'll hear the roar from Brisbane!!!

And then there is Coopers famous warranty that doesn't cover you if you drive outside the metro area because: "Road conditions can vary so much".........DOH!

Re: Coopers ATR & poor mileage

When I traded my previous Prado, its passenger 265/65/R17 ATR tyres had covered over 130,000km without rotation and were still (just) legal.

Coming up to 50,000km on current Prado and no problems with this set either.
