Strangely the guy at beaurepairs told me he would not reccomend any of his tires for the Prado and that Jax are the cheapest for BFG in Qld. Seeing they had previously quoted me a higher figure I phoned another branch (Yerongapilly) instead and they will do it for $310 fitted balanced and old tire dumped for 265/70/17's

I'm doing a search for the link here just forgotten where it is right now, but I thought that to remain legal in Qld you couldn't go to 265/70R17 but you could go 275/65R17.

That is correct, 275/65/17 would be the largest tyre you could fit to the prado and keep it legal in Qld. I just fitted the 275/65/17's BFG's A/T's to mine and am very happy. Jax at Capalaba quoted me $310 for the 275/65 and $349 for the 265/70 in the BFG A/T's.

Have you noticed any difference in the speedometer readings? I am considering the 275/65R17 upgrade when the Grandtreks wear out and was wondering if the speedo now reads under or over?

it should be close to been right, standard tyres will read 5k less, 70 series will be close to spot on, the 275's should be somewhere in the middle, my guess would 2-3k less.

I just put the BFG's on @ 265/70/17 and checked out the speedo straight away with the checkpoint on the Geelong - Melbourne Road.
Previously on the standard Grandtreks the speedo was out about 4 -5 kph. The new tyres have now shown only a 1 kph difference.

I don't know where Toyota draw the line but my 2003 Grande is spot on speedometer wise on the Grandtreks. On certain year models onwards, Toyota calibrated the speedo to over read. So for the newer models, fitting the 70series profile tyres would bring the speedo back to being more accurate.

For me, I've just put on MTRs and my speedo is under reading. At 60km'h on the speedo, I'm doing about 63km/h on the GPS (indicative). Haven't done a full straight road constant speed "calibration" against the GPS yet.

My 03 Prado Grande was absolutely spot on. Now we have the 08 Diesel Grande and this is the vehicle that was out.
I think most cars have some allowance so I was always amazed by the accuracy of the 03 Grande

Thanks guys for the updates on the accuracy, I'll have to run a speedo test before & after I do the change over so I know what my limits are. I've got a way to go, just about to hit 15K** so there is probably another year in these tyres unless they start to wear badly.

If you have a GPS or now someone who has one you can check the speedo yourself, happy to help if you need to, just yell out. Actually dosn't the Grande show the speed on the GPS??? I drive by the GPS speedo thats all i use.

Not on mine. And I don't think it was implemented on the later models. The last thing Toyota wants is a whole lot of Grande customers going back to them complaining about how the speedo is not matched to the factory satnav's speedo.

The GPS runs off a satelite, i found it pretty dame accurate in the past, it should be close to spot on.

Sorry i cannot be of any help with the difference in speedometer readings as i replaced the grandtreks with the BFG's when my prado had only done 40klm. Straight from the toyota sales yard to Bob Jane.

In other posts I have detailed where after fitting the 70 series BFG ATs to my 120 I have used both GPS and decataur mobile radar (certified) to show all is now correct. That is speedo, GPS and radar all reading the same for the best part of 60 - 120km/hr.

This proves that the Toyota speedo, when using 65 series tyres as fitted standard, is out by around 5 - 6km/hr, that is it READS FASTER THAN YOU ARE ACTUALLY DOING. The manufacturer can get away with this level of error. They just can't go the other way.

My Holden Colorado work ute is out by 9km/hr with Bridgestone 694s.
