    Re: 275/65R17's for my 120

And just a clarification please: are spare wheel spacers absolutely required for 275/65R17 tyres (including the BFGs)???

      Hi Sunday,
Yes spacers are absolutely required. See Noddy7's post in the spacer thread.

Best price I have so far on the BFG AT 275x65x17 is $320 does this sound about right by others? I was quoted $250 for 265s so it seems a big difference but then the quote was off the top of the guys head????

Those prices are very cheap IMO.

Where were you quoted prices like that?

            Oldgreyguy,

I have standard suspension and have no rubbing at all from the 275's.

            Sunday,

You will DEFINATELY need spacers if you want to fit a 275 spare. I used 19mm spacers and this worked just fine (see pictures on viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1571&start=240 )

            Everyone else,

I have done approx 10,000kms on the new BFG's and am very happy with them. It is a little early to comment on wear. Points to note though:

            1. You will notice a small increase in road noise from the Grandcraps but this is to be expected moving from a road tyre to an AT. This does not bother me or the missus.
            2. I have noticed an increase in fuel consumption of approx 3-5% since making the change. Most of this is due to the increased rolling diameter of the larger tyre (not an actual increase in fuel usage) but I suspect some is due to the increased width (footprint) of the tyre and increased rolling resistance caused by the more agressive tread pattern.
            3. I have not noticed any deterioration in on-road performance (moving from the grandcraps) but there has been a definite improvement in off-road (only sand driving and gravel tracks so far)
            4. The sidewalls are stiffer (due to tyre being a LT construction) and although this helps off road (able to reduce tyre pressure further with less bulging) it does make the ride a little harsher on road.

At the end of the day, if I had my time again I would still choose the BFG's.

$320 at Jax Tyres, I called the other guy back today but his price was around the same price and the $250 he then said was for Coopers so I am now confused and since he was elusive about tyres and price I will stay away.

                Re: 275/65R17's for my 120

Today I got a set of 5 Bridgestone 694 pattern 275/65R17s fitted. I'd done a bit of research, considered my needs & shopped around. I'd already decided this size would be the replacement size for my worn our Dunlops but spent a lot of time deciding between BFGs, Yokohamas & Bridgestones (Pirellis also came into the picture late in the piece).

While I liked the thought of fitting the (undoubtedly) robust BFGs for lots of stony & gravel-road travelling, I realised a great deal of my "real" running will be around town & towing our Kedron caravan around the country (we recently sold the camper trailer & bought a second hand Kedron, love it!). So I really needed not only a robust tyre but one that will still stop & handle well on the blacktop. With all things considered I settled on the Bridgestone 694s: the consensus seems to be they are an excellent all round tyre without being at all "wimpy" off road.

I then had to decide between LT or "normal" construction. Comparing the load ratings, I determined the standard 275s (at 115) were pretty robust and at a quoted price of $295.00 from my local Tyrepower outlet were very competitive. Also the LT version was pretty hard to get right now in that size & I reasoned that with my pattern of useage the standard tyres would be fine (while I'll be doing a lot of gravel roads, not planning to do the Gibb River Road just yet).

I had 4 fitted up today (the spare is still waiting for my spacers to arrive from amts so still have the Dunlop hanging off the back door right now) and I have to say already they are clearly a vast improvement on the Dunlops. The 7mm extra profile does make a difference & the tread bite & sidewall stiffness provide much better road feel, turn-in etc. while still providing good ride characteristics.

I'll add some photos soon & provide updates with use & wear.
